Chapter 24

The drive from the Moretti estate to the downtown headquarters usually took thirty minutes. Gabriel made it in fifteen.
He didn't take his usual armored sedan. He took a heavily modified tactical SUV, flanked by two escort vehicles filled with his most elite enforcers. The convoy tore through the foggy Chicago streets, sirens wailing, running red lights with brutal efficiency.
Inside the SUV, Gabriel sat in the passenger seat, checking the magazine of his sidearm. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying granite. Vanessa had crossed the one line he had drawn in the sand. She had threatened his child.
"Boss, we're three blocks away from the headquarters," the driver reported, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"Keep your eyes open," Gabriel ordered. "If the Romanovs are backing her, they won't wait forty-eight hours. The ultimatum is a distraction."
As the convoy turned onto the industrial avenue leading to the Hayes & Moretti glass tower, a massive, unmarked garbage truck suddenly pulled out from a side alley, blocking the entire four-lane road.
"Ambush! Hard right!" Gabriel roared.
The driver yanked the steering wheel, but the heavy SUV skidded on the damp asphalt. Before they could correct the spin, the back doors of the garbage truck flew open.
Four men in heavy tactical gear, armed with automatic rifles, opened fire.
The deafening roar of gunfire shattered the morning commute. Bullets rained down on the convoy, sparking against the reinforced armor of Gabriel’s SUV. The ballistic glass spider-webbed under the heavy caliber impact, but it held.
"Return fire!" Gabriel shouted, kicking open his passenger door and using the heavy armor as a shield.
The enforcers in the escort vehicles leaped out, returning a barrage of covering fire. The street descended into absolute chaos, the air thick with smoke, the smell of cordite, and the screams of fleeing civilians.
Gabriel moved with the predatory, lethal grace of a man who had spent his entire life fighting in the shadows. He didn't waste ammunition. He fired controlled, precise shots, dropping two of the Romanov mercenaries before they could reload.
But they were heavily outgunned. More mercenaries poured out from the adjacent alleyways, pinning Gabriel and his men behind their shredded vehicles.
"Boss, we're trapped!" Bruno yelled over the radio, pinned down behind the rear escort car. "They have elevated positions on the fire escapes!"
Gabriel gritted his teeth, ducking as a volley of bullets tore into the hood of his SUV. He looked up at the towering glass facade of his headquarters, just two blocks away.
Inside the executive suite, Rachel heard the gunfire echoing up from the street. She ran to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the plume of smoke rising from the avenue. She saw Gabriel’s convoy pinned down by a massive blockade.
Panic seized her throat, but she ruthlessly shoved it down. She was not a helpless maid anymore. She was the CEO of a logistics empire.
She turned and sprinted to her desk, tearing open a locked drawer. She pulled out a secure radio transceiver linked directly to the commercial shipping yard situated adjacent to the avenue.
"Yard Control, this is Rachel Moretti, authentication code Alpha-Seven-Tango," Rachel barked into the radio, her voice ringing with absolute authority.
"Mrs. Moretti? We hear gunfire, what are your orders?" the yard supervisor panicked.
"You have a fully loaded commercial freight train idling on track four, parallel to the avenue," Rachel stated, pulling up the live yard schematic on her monitor. "I need you to decouple the rear cargo cars and push the locomotive straight through the secondary perimeter gate onto the avenue. Maximum throttle."
May you like
"Ma'am, that will derail the train right into the street! It will destroy the cargo!"
"I don't care about the cargo! Do it now!" Rachel screamed.
