Chapter 20

A year later, the Moretti estate was a different world. The cold, austere halls were filled with the sounds of Lily’s laughter and the warm, comforting smell of Rachel’s baking. The syndicate operations had been heavily restructured, shifting focus to the legitimate shipping and real estate ventures, minimizing the blood and the violence.
It was a Sunday afternoon, and Gabriel was in the study, reviewing the final permits for a new waterfront development project. The door clicked open, and Rachel walked in, carrying a small, wrapped package.
"What’s this?" Gabriel asked, leaning back in his leather chair, a smile touching his lips.
"Open it," Rachel said, setting it on the mahogany desk.
Gabriel reached out, carefully unwrapping the brown paper. Inside was a small, hand-painted wooden sign. It read: Hayes & Moretti Shipping Co.
Gabriel stared at the sign, his throat tightening. "Rachel..."
"I filed the paperwork this morning," Rachel said softly, stepping closer. "The new legitimate front. I wanted Daniel’s name on it. He helped build the foundation, Gabriel. It’s time the world knew it."
Gabriel stood up, walking around the desk to pull her into his arms. He pressed his forehead against hers, closing his eyes against the sudden sting of tears. "Thank you," he whispered.
"You don't have to thank me," Rachel replied, resting her hands against his chest. "We’re a team now."
Suddenly, the door burst open again, and Lily ran into the room, holding a drawing she had made.
"Daddy! Look what I drew!" she announced proudly, holding up a crayon drawing of three stick figures standing outside a big house.
Gabriel let go of Rachel and knelt down to look at the drawing. He pointed to the largest stick figure. "Is this me?"
May you like
"Yes," Lily beamed. "And this is Mommy, and this is me. We’re a family."
Gabriel smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile. He picked up his daughter, holding her close, and looked at his wife. The ghosts of the past were finally at peace, and the future of the platinum empire was brighter than he could have ever imagined.
