Chapter 55 - The Severed Thread

The words hung in the sulfur-choked air of the bunker like a toxic vapor.

Claire’s hand trembled against the console, her breath catching in her throat.

"Repeat that," Claire whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring alarms.

"The video was staged, Claire," Margaret’s voice crackled, growing weaker as the signal decayed. "Hayes shot Richard with a tranquilizer and staged the execution for the syndicate board."

"Why?" Claire demanded, her knuckles turning bone white against the edge of the desk.

"Because Richard was the only one who knew the fail-safe codes to the global offshore network," Margaret said quickly. "Hayes has kept him in a medical coma for twenty-four years."

A loud explosion echoed through Margaret's end of the comm line, followed by the shrieking of metal.

"Claire! The convoy is compromised—they're breaching the transport vehicle!" Margaret screamed.

"Where is he?" Claire shouted into the microphone. "Where is my father?!"

Static hissed, followed by Margaret’s broken voice: "The lower... sub-level four... beneath the geothermal vent..."

A burst of gunfire tore through the audio, followed by a heavy thud and dead silence.

The line went completely dead.

Claire lowered her head, the weight of the revelation crashing down upon her shoulders.

For twenty-four years, she had believed her father was buried beneath a marble headstone in Arlington.

For twenty-four years, she had hated Margaret, mourned Richard, and trusted Hayes as her savior.

"Claire," Thomas said softly, placing a heavy, supportive hand on her shoulder.

Claire snapped her head up, her eyes burning with an icy, terrifying intensity.

"He's alive," Claire said, her voice completely devoid of hesitation.

"Sub-level four is right next to the reactor chamber," Julian noted, studying the facility schematics.

"Then we have ten minutes to stop Hayes, save your father, and get out of this mountain," Thomas said, chambering a round into his rifle.

"You're wounded, Thomas," Claire said, glancing down at the dark crimson stain spreading across his side.

"I can walk, Commander," Thomas said, offering a faint, stubborn grin. "And I sure as hell ain't missing this family reunion."

Julian picked up two spare magazines from the fallen mercenaries on the deck.

"The primary elevator is locked out," Julian said, gesturing toward the maintenance hatch. "We take the service ladder straight down through the cooling conduits."

"Let's move," Claire commanded.

She swung herself through the narrow hatch, dropping into the vertical access shaft.

The heat was already rising from the depths, thick with the smell of sulfur and boiling coolant.

Fifty feet below, the rhythmic clanging of heavy machinery signaled that Hayes had already begun the meltdown sequence.

Claire descended the metal rungs with blinding speed, her mind entirely focused on the ghost of the father she had never known.
