Chapter 49 - The Belly of the Mountain

The air inside the hydro-electric intake shaft was freezing, heavy with the deafening roar of cascading water rushing through adjacent conduits.

Claire sprinted through the slick, concrete tube, the beam of her weapon-mounted light bouncing wildly against walls coated in thick mineral scale.

Behind them, the entrance to the culvert collapsed under a volley of helicopter rockets, sealing them in absolute, lightless isolation.

The ground shuddered with secondary impacts, but the ancient mountain absorbed the kinetic fury above like solid armor.

"Keep moving!" Claire urged, supporting Miller whose leg brace was groaning under the relentless pace. "The emergency stairwell should be three hundred yards ahead!"

They reached a massive rusted steel landing where the water diverted into enormous intake turbines humming with terrifying, low-frequency power.

To their right, an unlisted blast door painted in faded olive-drab stenciling read: SUB-LEVEL SEVEN — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

The electronic access terminal beside the door was dark, its screen shattered by a single, deliberate bullet hole.

"Julian went through here," Thomas said, inspecting the fresh brass casing lying on the concrete landing. "He locked the magnetic seals behind him to trap us in the spillway."

"He didn't trap us," Claire said, pulling a specialized combat multi-tool from her vest and unscrewing the maintenance plate beneath the destroyed screen. "He just made it noisy."

She pulled two thick bundles of copper wiring from the wall, stripping the insulation with her combat knife.

"Claire, what are you doing?" Hayes asked, his hand pressed against the vibrating wall. "If you trip the emergency breaker, the automated fire suppression will flood the corridor with Halon gas!"

"Then we hold our breath," Claire replied without hesitating.

She touched the bare positive wire directly to the auxiliary terminal lead, creating a shower of brilliant blue electric sparks.

Deep within the reinforced wall, three massive pneumatic solenoids disengaged with a resonant, metallic CLANG that reverberated through the soles of their boots.

The multi-ton blast door slowly, agonizingly rolled back along its track, revealing a pristine, sterile white hallway that looked like it belonged in a research hospital rather than a military bunker.

The contrast was jarring; after hours of crawling through sewers, mud, and bullet-riddled ditches, they were stepping into an ultra-modern corporate fortress.

Classical music played softly from recessed ceiling speakers, an eerie, sickening soundtrack to the automated tomb.

"Welcome to Margaret’s playground," Thomas muttered, stepping into the hallway with his rifle swept forward into the corners.

The floor was made of polished white epoxy, so clean that Claire’s bloody combat boots left grotesque crimson footprints with every step she took.

Along the walls, flat-panel glass displays displayed live financial stock tickers, satellite telemetry maps of global mercenary deployments, and endless lines of encrypted code.

"The servers are already synchronizing," Hayes whispered, horror creeping into his voice as he looked at the central countdown clock mounted on the far wall. "He’s initiating the global asset transfer."

T-MINUS 04:12 TO PROTOCOL LOCKOUT, the automated display flashed in cold amber text.

"If that counter reaches zero, Julian assumes undisputed ownership of every shell company and private army on earth," Hayes warned. "The United States government won't be able to touch him."

"Where is the master console?" Claire demanded, racking the bolt of her weapon.

"Behind the inner vault doors at the end of this hall," Hayes pointed with a trembling finger toward two towering titanium slabs bearing the gold-embossed seal of the Serpent.

Suddenly, the soft classical music cut off abruptly, replaced by the mechanical hissing of the ceiling vents opening.

"Intruder detected in Sector Seven," an automated female voice chimed with horrifying politeness. "Atmospheric purge initiated. Lethal gas dispersal in thirty seconds."

"He knew we were coming," Marcus barked, his face tightening as he smelled the faint, sweet scent of cyanide gas drifting into the air.

"Thomas, Marcus, Miller—get Hayes into the environmental isolation chamber by the airlock!" Claire ordered, her voice brooking no argument.

"Claire, we’re not leaving you to face him alone!" Thomas yelled, grabbing her arm.

"You can't breathe this gas, Thomas!" Claire shouted, tearing her arm free and shoving them toward the reinforced glass isolation booth ten feet away. "Only one person can stop that clock, and it requires my blood!"

She slammed the exterior seal on their isolation booth, locking them safely inside the airtight glass unit just as the first clouds of pale blue gas began swirling down from the ceiling.

May you like

Claire took one massive, deep breath of clean air, clamped her lips shut, and charged down the sterile white corridor toward the golden vault doors.

She had sixty seconds of oxygen in her lungs to save her unit, avenge her father, and destroy the monster Margaret had built.
