Chapter 24 - The Iron Fortress of Red Hook

Claire reacted before her conscious mind could process the threat.

She threw her body across the center console, tackling Mia down into the footwell just as a high-caliber round pulverized the back windshield.

Glass rained over them in a glittering storm of razor-sharp shards.

"Drive!" Claire screamed at Marcus, her weight pinning the trembling girl securely against the car floor.

Marcus gritted his teeth, jammed the transmission into reverse, and slammed his boot against the accelerator.

The sedan tore backward down the gravel driveway, tires screaming as gravel sprayed into the darkness.

A second round slammed into the engine block, sending steam hissing through the fractured hood, but the car kept moving.

Marcus spun the steering wheel wildly, drifting onto the main road before throwing the car into drive and speeding south.

"They won't stop until she's erased," Marcus said through gritted teeth, coughing up dark phlegm. "The girl is the living proof that Margaret’s entire war foundation was a black-budget laundering front."

"We're not running to another agency," Claire said coldly, checking Mia for injuries. The little girl was unhurt, but pale as chalk.

"Then where?" Marcus asked, his vision swimming as shock began to creep into his extremities. "Every military police detachment within fifty miles answers to Margaret’s cronies."

"Red Hook, Brooklyn," Claire replied without hesitation. "To the Old Guard."

Three hours later, the smoking, battered sedan crawled into an abandoned industrial shipyard along the Brooklyn waterfront.

The salt air from New York Harbor mingled with the smell of diesel and rusting iron.

Claire guided the car into a massive, corrugated steel warehouse labeled *ALTAIR MARITIME REPAIR*.

The heavy rolling metal door lifted smoothly the moment Claire flashed her high beams three times.

Inside stood four men in their late fifties, dressed in faded civilian work clothes, every single one of them holding a military-grade weapon.

At their center stood Master Chief Abraham Torres—the man who had trained Claire’s father forty years ago.

"You look like hell, Lieutenant Commander," Torres said, lowering his shotgun as Claire stepped out of the vehicle.

"I need a surgeon, a secure room, and twenty-four hours of total blackout," Claire said, supporting Marcus’s weight as they exited.

Torres’s weathered face softened as his gaze fell on Mia, who peeked out from behind Claire’s trench coat.

"She has Reyes’s eyes," Torres murmured softly, his voice thick with unexpressed grief.

"She isn't Reyes’s child, Chief," Claire revealed, her voice echoing in the vast, hollow hangar.

Torres’s head snapped up, his piercing gray eyes narrowing. "Whose blood is she?"

"Phantom," Claire answered plainly.

A dead silence fell over the five combat veterans standing in the warehouse.

One of the men actually crossed himself, while another took an involuntary step backward.

"Phantom died in the cave collapse at Tora Bora," Torres whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in forty years.

"He walked up to this child in Washington this morning," Claire said, pulling the silver ring from her pocket and tossing it to Torres.

Torres caught the ring, his thumb tracing the serpent’s carved jaws.

His face turned completely pale under the harsh fluorescent work lights.

"This isn't an operative's ring, Claire," Torres said, looking up with genuine horror in his eyes.

"What is it, Abraham?" Claire demanded, stepping forward.

"This is the crest of the Directorate of Special Plans," Torres said, his hand shaking. "It was Margaret’s private intelligence unit before she entered the Senate."

Claire felt the ground vanish beneath her feet.

"Margaret didn't hire Phantom," Torres whispered. "Margaret created him."
