Chapter 43 - The Dragon's Bargain

The world seemed to halt, suspended on the razor's edge of Julian’s cruel declaration.

Claire’s rifle did not waver, but her pulse hammered in her throat like a trapped bird beating against its cage.

"You don't know where they are," Claire said, her voice dropping into a deadly, calculated monotone. "Their transport was unlisted."

"Unlisted to the Pentagon, perhaps," Julian laughed softly, gesturing casually to the heavily armed operators flanking him. "But Margaret owned the private airstrip where your little medic landed them."

Thomas shifted his footing beside Claire, his knuckles white against his rifle grip as he monitored the advancing Vanguard shield-bearers.

"He’s bluffing, Claire," Thomas muttered under his breath, his eyes never leaving the hostile formation. "He’s trying to buy time to breach the mainframe."

"Am I bluffing, Captain?" Julian asked, raising his left hand to reveal a sleek tactical tablet strapped to his forearm.

With a flick of his gloved thumb, Julian tapped the screen and spun the display outward so Claire could see the high-definition video feed.

On the screen, Marcus lay in a white hospital bed with an IV line hooked to his arm, completely unaware of the red laser dot dancing across his forehead.

In the adjacent room, through a frosted glass window, Miller was seen limping on crutches toward the nurse’s station.

"Two sniper teams on the opposite roof," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of human empathy. "One word from me, and the last remnants of the One-Eighty-Seven cease to exist."

Claire felt a wave of cold nausea wash over her, threatening to drown the fire that kept her upright.

She had bled for those men in the dust of Sangin; she had dragged their broken bodies out of burning wreckage while mortars rained around them.

"What do you want, Julian?" Claire asked, lowering the muzzle of her weapon by a fraction of an inch.

"The envelope," Julian replied simply, extending his open palm toward her. "The Firstborn archive. Hand it over, and your pathetic friends live to see sunrise."

"Don't do it, Claire!" Hayes shouted from behind the server rack, blood seeping from a shrapnel wound across his temple. "If he gets those codes, the syndicate becomes invincible!"

Julian didn't even look at the old Admiral; he simply signaled with two fingers to the operator on his far right.

A suppressed rifle barked twice.

The bullets struck Hayes in the right shoulder and thigh, sending the elderly officer crashing heavily to the steel decking with a suppressed groan.

"Hayes!" Claire yelled, taking an involuntary half-step forward before Julian raised his tablet warningly.

"Next one takes off his jaw, Claire," Julian warned, his eyes narrowing with sudden, vicious intensity. "Make your choice. Your dead father's dusty secrets, or your living brothers."

Claire stood paralyzed, torn between the legacy of a man she had never known and the flesh-and-blood comrades who shared her soul.

Her fingers reached slowly into her chest rig, wrapping around the rough, wax-sealed surface of the yellow envelope.

"Claire, no," Thomas whispered beside her, his jaw set in profound, helpless agony. "There has to be another way."

"There is no other way, Thomas," Claire said, her voice eerily calm as she slowly pulled the thick dossier into the open air. "We don't leave our people behind. Ever."

Julian’s eyes flared with predatory greed as the crimson seal caught the amber emergency lights.

"A predictable, sentimental fool," Julian mocked, stepping forward past his armored shield-bearers with an outstretched hand. "Just like our dear, departed father."

"Come take it," Claire whispered, holding the envelope out with her left hand while her right rested casually against her combat sling.

Julian took three confident strides across the shattered glass, his fingers reaching out to snatch the envelope from her grip.

In that fraction of a second, as Julian’s fingertips brushed the paper, Claire saw the reflection of the ceiling sprinkler system in his dark pupils.

She didn't hand him the file.

With lightning speed honed by thousands of hours of black-ops training, Claire grabbed Julian’s wrist, twisting it violently inward until the joint popped sickeningly.

Before he could scream, Claire drove the heel of her combat boot directly into the knee joint of his lead leg, shattering the bone beneath the fabric.

Julian collapsed to one knee with an agonized shriek, dropping the tablet onto the hard deck.

In the same fluid motion, Claire snatched a high-intensity flash-grenade from her tactical vest, pulled the pin with her teeth, and shoved it directly down the front of Julian's trench coat.

"Thomas, hit the deck!" Claire screamed, diving backward over the command console and dragging Admiral Hayes down with her.

An instant later, the room detonated in a blinding sphere of white magnesium fire and concussive thunder.
