Chapter 19 - Firefight at the Water’s Edge

The darkness exploded into a symphony of gunfire and flashing muzzle blasts.

Claire grabbed Evelyn by the arm, dragging her screaming mother off the metal stairs and shoving her behind the reinforced steel landing gear of the jet.

"Stay down if you want to live!" Claire barked at the terrified woman.

Suppressed rounds ricocheted off the fuselage with high-pitched metallic shrieks, throwing sparks into the violet smoke.

Marcus and Miller moved like synchronized predators, firing through the mist with surgical accuracy.

The private contractors, expecting an easy execution of trapped survivors, were wholly unprepared for combat-hardened Tier-One operators.

Two contractors went down in the first four seconds, their tactical lights shattering under Miller’s precision fire from the tree line.

"Fall back! They have fortified positions!" a contractor screamed through the chaos.

Claire sprinted through the smoke, using the briefcase as an improvised shield against ricocheting shrapnel.

She rounded the wing of the aircraft, coming face-to-face with General Vance’s personal bodyguard.

The man swung his carbine toward her, but Claire dropped low, sweeping his legs out from under him with a brutal kick.

As he hit the wet asphalt, Claire drove her tactical elbow into his temple, knocking him unconscious before he could pull the trigger.

She snatched his dropped radio from his vest, switching the channel to the primary open tactical frequency.

"Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay, this is Commander Claire Sterling, United States Navy!" she yelled into the transmitter.

"I am transmitting emergency distress beacon from grid coordinate Alpha-Nine-Zero-Four!" Claire shouted over the gunfire.

"We are under active assault by rogue paramilitary forces attempting treason against the United States!"

From the speakers of the radio, a crisp, authoritative voice broke through the static:

"Commander Sterling, this is the Admiral of Naval District Washington. We copy your distress call."

"Hold your position, Commander," the voice ordered with thunderous authority. "Naval strike craft are ten seconds out."

Across the tarmac, General Vance heard the radio transmission and froze in sheer terror.

"Kill her! Kill her now!" Vance screamed at his remaining men, his dignified facade completely evaporating into wild panic.

Suddenly, the roar of four high-speed Navy Riverine assault craft tore through the marsh channels bordering the airfield.

Fifty-caliber twin heavy machine guns mounted on the bows illuminated the tree line with continuous, terrifying tracer fire.

The remaining private contractors threw down their weapons and fell face-first into the mud, knowing they were completely outmatched.

General Vance dropped his sidearm onto the tarmac, standing alone under the flashing floodlights of the incoming gunboats.

The rain beat down relentlessly on his four silver stars as armed federal agents and Navy security forces surrounded the perimeter.

Claire walked slowly out of the violet smoke, her face streaked with soot and rain, holding the intact briefcase in her left hand.

Marcus stepped up beside her, bleeding slightly from a graze on his forearm, but grinning with savage satisfaction.

"Checkmate, General," Marcus said quietly, keeping his rifle trained squarely on Vance’s chest.

General Vance stared at Claire, his chest heaving, his empire destroyed in a matter of twenty minutes.

"You’ve destroyed everything, Claire," Vance wheezed, his eyes hollow and dead. "Everything your father and I built."

"No, Vance," Claire said, standing tall before the disgraced flag officer. "I just honored the oath you broke."

Federal marshals swarmed the tarmac, forcing General Vance down onto his knees in the mud and clamping steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Evelyn was led away in another set of cuffs, weeping hysterically, unable to look her daughter in the eyes.

As Raymond was loaded into an emergency tactical ambulance under heavy guard, Claire stood alone on the edge of the runway, letting the cold rain wash the grime from her face.

It was finally over. The truth was out, the fallen were avenged, and Mia was safe.

Or so she believed.
