Chapter 15 - The Marshland Fortress

The storm rolled over the Maryland eastern shore with violent fury, dumping sheets of torrential rain across the desolate salt marshes.

A single heavily armored black tactical truck cut its high beams as it turned off the state highway onto an unmarked dirt road.

Claire sat in the passenger seat, rack-sliding the bolt of a suppressed M4 carbine with calm, mechanical precision.

Beside her, Marcus drove with night-vision goggles strapped over his tactical helmet, tracking the infrared path through the mud.

In the back, Miller and four other combat veterans from their old unit adjusted plate carriers and checked magazine feeds.

"Airfield is two miles out through the tree line," Miller reported quietly from the rear console.

"Satellite feed shows twelve armed hostiles patrolling the tarmac," Miller added, tapping the encrypted tablet.

"The cargo plane has its engines warming up on the main runway," Miller confirmed.

"We have no federal backup coming, boys," Claire said, turning around to face her brothers-in-arms.

"The civilian police are locked down by corrupt injunctions from Washington," she told them plainly.

"If we cross that tree line, we’re operating completely off the grid," Claire stated with unwavering resolve.

"Claire," Marcus said, glancing sideways through the green tint of his night-vision gear.

"Every man in this truck owes you his life three times over," Marcus reminded her with a fierce, quiet grin.

"We aren't here for the government," Marcus said firmly. "We’re here for Reyes. And we’re here for Mia."

"Lock and load," Miller grinned grimly, slapping a fresh magazine into his rifle with a loud metallic snap.

The truck ground to a gentle halt beneath the canopy of dripping weeping willows fifty yards from the airfield fence.

Claire stepped down into the ankle-deep marsh water, rain immediately plastering her tactical jacket to her shoulders.

Through the mist, the illuminated hangar looked like an isolated fortress carved into the black expanse of the swamp.

A sleek Gulfstream transport jet sat idling on the cracked tarmac, its twin jet engines whining against the howling wind.

Claire lifted her thermal binoculars, scanning the open hangar bay beneath the halogen floodlights.

Standing near the mobile boarding stairs was her mother, Evelyn, wearing an expensive cashmere trench coat against the rain.

Beside her stood Raymond Vance, tall, broad-shouldered, carrying a heavy carbon-fiber briefcase chained to his wrist.

On his right hand, the silver falcon signet ring gleamed brightly under the airfield lights.

"They’re preparing to board," Claire whispered through her tactical headset.

"Miller, take out the perimeter floodlights on my mark," Claire commanded quietly.

"Team Two, disable the jet's front landing gear before they can initiate taxi protocols," she added.

"Marcus and I are taking the hangar floor," Claire ordered, her voice dead steady.

"Rules of engagement, Commander?" Marcus asked, clicking off the safety of his rifle.

Claire stared through the crosshairs directly at Raymond Vance’s smiling face as he laughed with her mother.

"They made this a war seven years ago in Sangin," Claire said, her voice freezing the humid night air.

"We finish it tonight."
