Chapter 46 - The Iron Brotherhood

The concussive echo of gunfire inside the vaulted aqueduct was nearly deafening, bouncing violently off the curved concrete surfaces.

Water erupted in vertical geysers around them as high-velocity rounds churned the muck into a foaming frenzy.

Thomas fired with surgical precision, keeping the advancing point-men pinned behind a crumbling brick pillar fifty yards downstream.

"Claire, move him!" Thomas bellowed over the roar of his weapon. "My last mag is in!"

Claire grabbed Hayes’s tactical harness with both hands, using all the strength in her legs to drag him around the curved concrete abutment into the secondary spur.

The Admiral groaned, his boots sloshing uselessly through the dark water, but he kept his good hand clamped over his bleeding chest.

"Leave me here, child," Hayes pleaded, his voice fading to a rasping whisper. "Give me a sidearm. I can buy you sixty seconds."

"Shut up, Admiral," Claire snarled, her breath coming in ragged, white plumes in the freezing subterranean air. "You survived forty years of cold war politics; you aren't dying in a sewer."

Suddenly, the heavy chattering of automatic fire from behind them abruptly ceased, replaced by the ominous metallic click of an empty bolt locking back.

"Thomas!" Claire yelled, her heart seizing.

Thomas backed around the corner, his rifle empty, pulling his secondary sidearm from its holster with grim finality.

"I’m dry on the long gun," Thomas said, his face illuminated by the distant tactical lights sweeping the tunnel walls. "We’ve got at least eight hostiles closing the gap."

Footsteps splashed heavily through the water, rapid, confident, and closing in from both directions of the subterranean junction.

Julian’s amplified voice echoed down the concrete tube, cold, mocking, and distorted by the enclosed space.

"Give it up, Claire!" Julian called out, accompanied by the metallic cocking of several heavy shotguns. "You’re trapped in a dead-end drainage basin! There is nowhere left to run!"

Claire stepped in front of Hayes, drawing her sidearm, her posture rigid and ready to fight to her last breath.

"Come get me, Julian!" she yelled back into the darkness. "Let’s see if your medical team can glue your throat back together!"

"Always the stubborn soldier," Julian’s voice sneered from just around the brick pillar. "Kill the Captain. Bring my sister to me on her knees."

Three Vanguard operators rounded the corner, their heavy weapon lights blinding in the enclosed space, their weapons raised to execute Thomas.

Before their triggers could be pulled, the heavy concrete ceiling above their heads detonated with an earth-shattering boom.

Slabs of asphalt, rebar, and industrial gravel crashed down directly onto the Vanguard vanguard, burying two operators instantly under tons of debris.

Through the gaping hole in the street above, daylight flooded into the dark tunnel, accompanied by the deafening roar of customized heavy-duty diesel engines.

"Cover your eyes, Commander!" a voice bellowed from the crater above.

A barrage of heavy tear gas canisters and flash-bangs rained down from the street level, transforming the aqueduct into an unbreathable cauldron of white smoke and screaming chaos.

Through the smoke, four heavily armored figures descended on steel rappelling cables, their weapons barking with terrifying, synchronized lethality.

Claire watched in disbelief as Miller, his leg heavily braced in combat carbon fiber, touched down in the water with an M249 squad automatic weapon pinned to his hip.

Beside him landed Marcus, his face pale from hospital bedrest, but his hands rock-steady on the receiver of a customized tactical shotgun.

"You look like hell, Commander," Miller yelled over the roar of his weapon as he shredded the remaining Vanguard operators into retreat.

"Marcus... Miller..." Claire whispered, her voice choking with an emotion so fierce it nearly brought her to her knees.

"You think the One-Eighty-Seven lets its Commander fight the syndicate without us?" Marcus grinned, pumping another round into his shotgun and firing into the fleeing hostiles. "We brought the whole retirement home with us."

Looking up through the gaping breach in the ceiling, Claire saw the silhouettes of a dozen older men in leather vests and military fatigue jackets, all aiming heavy hunting rifles down into the perimeter.

The veterans from the ballroom had come.

"Up the cables! Now!" Miller barked, snapping a heavy extraction harness around Admiral Hayes’s chest. "We’ve got two minutes before local police show up, and Margaret’s friends in the governor's office are already trying to scramble the National Guard!"

Thomas hooked himself onto the secondary winch, grabbing Claire’s arm to pull her toward the center line.

"Go, Claire!" Thomas urged. "Cheyenne Mountain is twelve hours west! We have to move before they lock down the airspace!"

Claire grabbed the main steel cable, looking down one last time into the smoke-filled aqueduct.

Through the drifting chemical fog, Julian crawled from beneath a slab of fallen concrete, his face bloody, his eyes burning with an obsessive, unholy hatred.

"This isn't over, Claire!" Julian screamed, spitting blood onto the concrete as the extraction winch hoisted her toward the sunlight. "The mountain will be your tomb!"

May you like

Claire stared down at him with cold, pitiless eyes as the daylight took her.

"I’m coming for your crown, Julian," she whispered into the wind.
