Chapter 16 - An Unspoken Bond

That evening, the estate returned to a tranquil stillness it had not known in months.
Noah was fast asleep upstairs, his small hand clutching a wooden model sailboat Ethan had carved for him. Elena stood on the wide terrace, the cool autumn breeze rustling the leaves of the old oak trees around the lake. The moonlight cast long, silver reflections across the undisturbed water.
A heavy woolen overcoat was gently draped over her shoulders.
She turned to see Ethan standing behind her, a glass of vintage port in his hand, his eyes calm and reflective.
"You should be resting," Ethan said softly. "You've fought off mercenaries, corporate trustees, and my insufferable aunt all in thirty-six hours."
Elena drew the warm coat around herself, smiling faintly. "I spent my whole life feeling like an outsider looking into houses like this, Ethan. Wondering why my father worked eighteen-hour shifts while the men inside sat in gilded chairs. Tonight, looking out at this lawn... I realize the stone doesn't make the house. The foundation does."
Ethan stepped closer, resting his elbows on the stone balustrade beside her. "My father kept many secrets, Elena. Most of them were toxic. But whatever brought you here, having you beside me... having you protect Noah... it’s the only good thing that ever came from his silence."
Elena looked up, meeting his storm-gray eyes. In the starlight, the barrier between master and maid, between estranged heirs, had entirely vanished.

"We make a good team, Mr. Vance," she whispered.
"Just Ethan," he murmured, his fingers gently brushing hers against the cold stone balustrade. "From now on, just Ethan."
