Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Ledger

Sterling pulled the leather volume toward him with trembling hands. As the trustees leaned in, Elena opened the yellowed pages. Inside were hand-drawn blueprints, concrete load calculations, and—most importantly—carbon-copy receipts bearing the signatures of both Arthur Sterling and the late patriarch, Robert Vance, dated October 1994.
"Every maritime manifest Julian claimed was missing," Elena stated, her voice calm, clear, and resonant, "was never shipped through Baltimore at all. Julian fabricated the weapons manifests using forged clearance codes to blackmail the family. The actual cargo was humanitarian heavy machinery chartered under federal maritime oversight."
A murmur of relief and indignation rippled through the gathered executives.
"This... this is an internal construction log, not a legal instrument!" Sterling sputtered, attempting to save face.
"It becomes an uncontestable legal instrument when paired with the biometric registry," Ethan said coldly. He placed the gold cufflink bearing the portrait of Elena’s mother onto the table. "You held a secret equity account in the Cayman Islands under Julian’s dummy corporation, Arthur. We pulled the transaction logs from Miller’s satellite phone before the federal marshals took him into custody."
Two federal agents in plainclothes stepped into the boardroom, badges held forward.
Sterling didn't utter another word. He was escorted out in silence, his career and treachery dismantled within ten minutes.
Ethan stood up and addressed the remaining board members. "Effective immediately, Elena Vance is instated as Senior Vice President of Historical Infrastructure and Security Oversight. She holds full veto authority over all domestic physical assets."
The board voted in unanimous affirmation.

When they stepped out into the sunlit executive elevator, Elena turned to Ethan, exhaling a quiet breath. "You moved fast."
"In this family, if you hesitate for an hour, the wolves take the territory," Ethan replied, offering her a faint, genuine smile. "Now, we have a promise to keep. Noah asked for chocolate pancakes, and Marcus says he won't eat unless his 'two favorite protectors' are at the table."
