Chapter 14 - The Matriarch’s Challenge

Genevieve Vance-DuPont entered the grand salon like an arctic squall. Dressed in tailored ivory tweed, adorned with pearls, and leaning on an ebony cane with a gold falcon handle, her hawk-like eyes swept over the newly installed windows before settling on Elena.

"So," Genevieve’s voice was crisp and dry, seasoned with decades of aristocratic disdain. "The rumors from the domestic staff were true. My brother Robert’s reckless past has walked into the foyer wearing designer trousers."

Elena stood beside the marble hearth, neither retreating nor showing deference. "Good morning, Madame DuPont."

"Aunt Genevieve," Ethan greeted, stepping between them with composed authority. "Your flight was unexpected."

"When a multi-billion-dollar empire is attacked by mercenaries, a helicopter crashes into the decorative pond, and an illegitimate daughter is handed a boardroom seat overnight, my presence is required," Genevieve declared, seating herself in an armchair without waiting for an invitation. "You’ve always been reckless with the family legacy, Ethan. First by marrying an intelligence analyst who brought enemies to our doorstep, and now by elevating a girl who was sweeping our floors last week."

"Watch your words," Ethan warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy baritone. "Elena saved Noah’s life. She exposed Julian’s treason. She earned her place with her blood and her loyalty."

"Loyalty can be bought; genetics cannot be erased," Genevieve countered sharply, leaning forward on her cane. "The European trustees will not recognize her claim under the 1994 covenant without an independent DNA audit conducted by our Swiss panel. If she refuses, the European liquidity accounts freeze on Friday. And without that liquidity, your shipping contracts in Rotterdam collapse."

"I don't need to hide behind lawyers or blood tests, Madame DuPont," Elena interrupted smoothly, stepping forward until she stood right beside Genevieve. "You may take any sample you require. But while your laboratory runs its tests, you might want to explain to Ethan why your personal Swiss banking code appeared on Julian’s Macau wire transfer receipts."
