Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months later, the legal battles were a distant memory, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of a life reclaimed on my own terms.
I returned to my office at Aegis Risk Solutions as the newly appointed Managing Director of Corporate Risk Assessment. The promotion had come swiftly, backed by the executive board who had watched how I surgically dismantled a multi-million-dollar fraudulent enterprise using nothing more than cold logic, forensic accounting, and unflinching resolve.
My office overlooked the sprawling financial district. The scars on my left cheek were barely visible now, masked expertly by a light cosmetic tint and healed by months of rigorous dermatological care. But whenever I looked in the mirror, I didn't see a victim of a viral wedding prank. I saw a survivor who had turned a weapon fired against her into the very instrument of her abusers' destruction.
Maya popped her head into my office door, holding a stack of quarterly risk assessment reports. "Sloan, the board review meeting for the multinational tech portfolio is in twenty minutes. You ready?"
"Always," I said, closing my laptop and standing up, smoothing out the fabric of my tailored blazer. "Did you verify the compliance logs for their third-party supply chain vendors?"
"Scanned, audited, and verified," Maya smiled, adjusting her glasses. "Not a single loophole or hidden liability in sight. Safe, secure, and bulletproof."
I smiled back, grabbing my tablet and heading toward the conference room.

I preferred reality. Because in the end, no matter how clever the prank or how grand the performance, the ledger always balances itself out. And when the bill finally comes due, I am the one holding the pen.
