Chapter 28 - The Counter-Audit

The single syllable fell upon the marble table like a lead weight dropped from a cathedral ceiling.
Baron de Montrichard surged to his feet, knocking his heavy leather chair backward onto the parquet floor with a resounding crash. "She refuses! Kill the link! Call the security detail!"
"Sit down, Pierre," I commanded.
I didn't shout. I didn't raise my voice. But the sheer, predatory authority vibrating in my tone made the Belgian baron freeze in place, his face turning an apoplectic shade of purple.
I took the micro-SD card and slotted it into the port of David’s laptop, which sat open on the table. With three keystrokes, I projected the contents onto the massive, high-definition display panel mounted on the ballroom wall behind Henrik’s head.
The screen lit up not with transfer receipts, but with a forensic matrix tracing Henrik’s own personal wealth management vehicles over the last forty years.
"You spent the last three decades preaching to this board about genetic perfection, systemic discipline, and the absolute purity of the Aethelgard ledger," I said, walking slowly along the perimeter of the table, looking each trustee dead in the eye. "You treated human lives like depreciation schedules. You engineered trauma, calculated suffering down to the milligram, and called it executive optimization."
I tapped the spacebar.
A new ledger appeared—highlighted in blinding red.
"What Henrik never told you," I continued, "is that the Genesis Protocol was never funded by Aethelgard’s sovereign reserves. It was funded by an unauthorized short position against the Consortium's own foundational clearing bonds."
The trustees turned their heads toward Henrik in stunned disbelief.
"He bet against your survival," I revealed, pointing at the numbers scrolling across the wall. "Every time an incubator was established—every time Arthur Sterling took fifty million dollars—Henrik opened a covert credit-default swap through a blind trust in Vaduz. If the subject broke, Henrik collected the insurance payout. If the subject succeeded and destroyed the host family, Henrik used the chaos to seize the family's underlying collateral for himself."
"Lies," Henrik hissed, though for the first time, his aristocratic mask slipped, revealing the rabid, cornered animal underneath. "She is fabricating the audit trails!"
"I don't fabricate data, Henrik. I am an auditor. You built me to find the rot in the ledger, and I found you."
I turned to the six other trustees.
"Look at the clearing codes. That isn't Arthur's signature. That is Henrik's personal authorization key—the one tied to that heavy gold signet ring on his finger. For thirty years, you thought you were building a shadow dynasty. In reality, you were funding one man's personal arbitrage scheme."
Montrichard slowly turned his gaze toward Henrik, his fists clenching at his sides. "Is this true, Henrik? Did you short the Belgian maritime line during the 2018 restructuring?"
"She is turning us against one another!" Henrik spat, rising from his chair, his hands trembling with suppressed fury. "Security! Clear this room!"
The double doors of the ballroom burst open.
Four private security operatives in dark suits entered, their hands moving toward their holsters.
David did not draw a weapon. He simply pulled an official red document pouch from his breast pocket and held it aloft.
"Under Article 14 of the Swiss Federal Banking Secrecy Act and Interpol Red Notice 884-B," David announced in a clear, resonant voice, "this entire facility is under immediate international judicial sequestration. The Swiss Federal Police and the French Financial Gendarmerie have already secured the perimeter of the estate."
Outside the tall, leaded glass windows overlooking Lake Geneva, the blue and red flashing lights of twenty tactical police interceptors pierced through the thick morning fog. Sirens wailed in the distance, echoing off the snow-covered slopes of the Alps.
I looked at Henrik, whose face had drained of every drop of blood.

"The audit is closed, Count," I said. "And you have been liquidated."
