Chapter 48 - The Silent Substation

When consciousness returned, it brought an agony that radiated through every bone in my body.

I was buried waist-deep in freezing powder. The bitter smell of burning aviation fuel hung thick in the crisp night air. A hundred yards down the slope, the crumpled, burning wreckage of the helicopter illuminated the snowfield in flickering orange hues.

I dragged myself out of the drift, coughing violently as the icy air seared my lungs. My tactical jacket had saved my torso, but my hands were numb with cold.

"Julianna?" I croaked, my voice swallowed by the vast, suffocating silence of the alpine wilderness.

A few yards away, a dark figure shifted in the snow. Julianna was on her hands and knees, shivering uncontrollably, her face pale as parchment. Miraculously, she was moving. Beside her, half-buried in the snow, was the ruggedized terminal—its military-grade casing cracked, but its small green power LED still blinking persistently.

I stumbled toward her, hauling her up into a standing position. "Can you walk?"

"I... I think so," she stammered through violently chattering teeth. "Clara... down there. Look."

She pointed through the clearing trees toward the base of the ridge. Standing in an isolated hollow, surrounded by high chain-link fences topped with razor wire, was a massive concrete bunker. Thick, heavy-gauge electrical cables hung from massive steel pylons leading directly into its reinforced roof.

It was an auxiliary transmission substation—one of the Cold War-era deep bunkers the Swiss and German governments had built into the mountain ranges to maintain critical communication during an atomic strike.

And the lights inside that compound were on.

"It has emergency hydro-power," I realized, picking up the terminal. "It's off the public grid. It's an isolated node."

"Henrik's ship... it was circling when we went down," Julianna whispered, glancing terrified at the clouds above. "He’s landing on the ridge. He’s coming."

"Then we make sure when he gets down here, there's nothing left for him to inherit."
