Chapter 16 - The Forensic Gambit

"Your smart contract made a calculation error, Arthur," I said, my voice utterly devoid of emotion, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a tremor or a defensive posture.
Arthur chuckled softly, resting both hands on the silver head of his cane. "Smart contracts do not make errors, my dear. They execute logic parameters. You, on the other hand, seem to mistake forensic auditing for actual power. You think that because you can decipher an offshore wire transfer, you possess the leverage to challenge men who draft the regulations you rely on."
"Your smart contract verified the federal docket every ninety days," I continued, taking a deliberate step closer, ignoring the stiffening posture of his bodyguards. "It searched for Julian's name and Vanessa's name. But it didn't search for the corporate receivership filing that was sealed by federal judge Morrison at dawn this morning."
Arthur’s eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. It was the first time I saw his predatory calm waver.
"What receivership?" he asked coldly.
"When Vanessa threw that glass, she wasn't just committing aggravated assault," I explained, maintaining absolute eye contact. "She was acting as an uncompensated operational agent for Helios Bio-Chemicals. Because the chemical compound used in the attack was an unregistered synthetic toxicant subject to the Chemical Weapons Convention, the jurisdiction of this case expanded beyond state court three weeks ago."
I reached into my briefcase and pulled out a single, embossed legal document bearing the joint seals of the United States Department of Justice, Interpol, and the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police.
"This is an international asset preservation warrant," I said. "As of six o'clock this morning, the Swiss Federal Banking Commission froze all access to the St. Jude Sovereign Trust. The air-gapped terminal in Frankfurt? The German Federal Criminal Police raided the facility forty minutes ago. They aren't wiping the servers, Arthur. They’re imaging them."
The silence in the marble rotunda became suffocating. The two bodyguards behind Arthur exchanged a swift, uneasy glance. In the world of shadow finance, loyalty lasts only as long as the liquidity flows. The moment an asset preservation warrant is served, bodyguards become potential co-conspirators facing twenty-year prison terms.

"You're bluffing," Arthur whispered, his voice losing its refined musicality, dropping into a harsh, guttural hiss. "You don't have the political capital to execute a cross-border seizure on Helios."
"I didn't need political capital," I replied with a cold, triumphant smile. "I needed an audit trail. And you gave it to me when you transferred that single, arrogant dollar to my firm’s terminal."
