Chapter 44 - Bloodline Parity

I looked down at Julianna, who was curled into a ball on the deck, coughing and clutching her ribs. For months, I had hated her. I had hated her smug face at the reception, the laughter that rang out as the burning liquid melted the collar of my dress, the callous betrayal that had nearly blinded me. But looking at her now, broken and discarded like an empty shell, I realized she was just another pawn sacrificed on the altar of the family dynasty.

"Let her sit in the co-pilot's jump seat," I said, keeping my gaze locked on Beatrice. "Uncuff her and give her oxygen. Then I'll look at your code."

Beatrice waved a dismissive hand. The guard picked Julianna up by the collar and dragged her forward into the cockpit cabin, latching the privacy door behind them.

I pulled the ruggedized terminal closer, resting it on my knees as I sat on a storage crate. The terminal was running an air-gapped terminal emulator connected directly to the primary satellite uplink antenna mounted on the helicopter's spine.

"Three minutes, Clara," Beatrice said, checking her platinum watch. "The window for the Frankfurt orbital relay passes at zero-three-hundred."

My fingers hovered over the keyboard. My mind raced through the forensic audit trails I had unraveled in Zurich, the encrypted fragments from Henrik's private vaults, and the hidden routines I had discovered in the Vaduz bunker. Henrik hadn't just created an authentication key. Henrik was a paranoid, vindictive genius who never gave anyone total control without a hidden trapdoor.

I began typing. To Beatrice, it looked like I was entering the complex 512-bit hexadecimal strings required to satisfy the root validation protocol.

In reality, I was hunting for the ghost in the machine.

Henrik had built the virus to purge Vivienne's syndicate. But when I introduced the recursive feedback loop in the mountain server room, I noticed something strange about the way the quarantine firewalls folded. They didn't just collapse; they mirrored each other.

There wasn't one master key. There were two.

`QUERY: DUAL_SOVEREIGN_PAIR`

`SYSTEM RESPONSE: IDENTIFIED. NODE A: CLARA VANCE [PRIMARY RECEPTOR]. NODE B: UNREGISTERED.`

My breath caught in my throat. I looked toward the closed cockpit door where Julianna had been dragged.

Henrik had known both of his daughters would be targeted. He had never trusted either of us individually, but his twisted sense of dynasty demanded that the legacy could only be wielded if both halves of his bloodline were present. The chemical Julianna threw in my face hadn't just activated my markers—it had contaminated her as well through transdermal vapor.

She wasn't just a decoy. She was the secondary fail-safe.
