Chapter 9

The silence that descended upon the dining room was absolute, save for the frantic, ragged breathing of Richard as he struggled against the bodyguard's grip. The relatives stared at the table in horror, realizing that they were witnessing the total legal and financial annihilation of one of their most prominent members. Elaine stopped crying, her jaw hanging slack as she looked at her husband with sudden, genuine terror, realizing that his reckless greed had finally dragged them both off the edge of a cliff. Walter slowly stood up from his chair, his tall frame trembling slightly with a mixture of rage and grief. He looked at his son—the man he had raised, educated, and handed an empire to—and saw only a stranger driven by bottomless avarice. "You forged my signature while I was unconscious on an operating table," Walter said, his voice barely above a whisper, carrying a weight far more terrifying than a shout. "You didn't just steal from your own daughter. You stole from me. You stole from our legacy." "Dad... Dad, listen to me, we can fix this!" Richard pleaded, tears finally spilling over his eyelids as his knees buckled slightly. "Don't involve the authorities! We're family! Think of the scandal! The board of directors will crucify us! The stock price will tank!" "The board of directors is already holding an emergency session at eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Emma said, slipping her phone back into her small evening purse. "I called them right before I walked into this dining room. By noon tomorrow, both of you will be stripped of your executive titles, your company shares, and your access to any family trusts." Elaine let out a muffled shriek and slid right out of her chair, collapsing onto the Persian rug in a heap of blue-gray satin and pearls, completely overwhelmed by the crushing reality of their ruin.
