Chapter 12

The morning sun carved sharp angles through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Walter Holdings corporate headquarters. At precisely eight o'clock, the emergency board session commenced in the glass-walled penthouse suite. Emma sat to the immediate right of Walter, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit that projected absolute authority. The twelve members of the board of directors—mostly older men and women who had known Emma since she was a child—sat in stunned, uncomfortable silence as copies of the forensic audit were distributed around the massive mahogany table.
Walter stood at the head of the table, his posture radiating a terrifying, ancient power. He did not need a microphone; his voice commanded the room with effortless gravity.
"Gentlemen, ladies," Walter began, placing his hands flat on the polished wood. "For the past three years, I stepped back from the daily operations of this firm to prioritize my health, trusting my son to steward our legacy. Today, I am officially rescinding that trust. Richard is out. Effective immediately."
A murmur of shock rippled through the executives. The Chief Financial Officer, a nervous man named Hayes, adjusted his glasses. "Walter, the market reaction to a sudden CEO ouster will be chaotic. The stock will plummet. Can we not frame this as a voluntary medical leave?"
"We will not lie to our shareholders to protect a thief," Emma interjected, her voice cutting through the panic like a diamond blade. She leaned forward, locking eyes with Hayes. "Richard did not just mismanage funds; he forged power of attorney documents and embezzled corporate assets into private offshore accounts. If we hide this, we are complicit in federal fraud. If we excise the rot publicly and aggressively, the market will respect our transparency and ruthless governance."

Walter nodded slowly, a proud gleam in his eye as he looked at his granddaughter. "Emma will be stepping in as the interim Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the complete forensic restructuring of the firm. I am resuming my position as CEO. Any board member who feels uncomfortable with this transition is welcome to submit their resignation by noon. Are there any takers?"
Silence reigned in the boardroom. Not a single pen was dropped. The empire had been reclaimed.
