Chapter 18

The heavy steel door of the archives swung fully open, and the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers painted the basement walls through the high egress windows. Three uniformed police officers, accompanied by a plainclothes detective, walked into the room.
"Richard Walter?" the detective asked, holding up a badge. "You are under arrest for breaking and entering, corporate espionage, and grand larceny. Stand up and put your hands behind your back."
Richard didn't resist. He couldn't. His body had completely given out, sagging like a puppet with its strings cut. The officers hauled him to his feet, pulling his arms behind them and clicking the heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists. The metallic sound echoed with a brutal, satisfying finality.
As they led him toward the stairs, Richard looked back over his shoulder. His eyes met Walter's one last time. There was no defiance left, only the hollow, pathetic stare of a man who had gambled his soul and lost everything. Walter did not look away, but he did not offer a shred of pity. He simply watched the police take his son away into the night.
Once the room was clear, Walter sagged slightly, leaning heavier on his cane. Emma immediately stepped to his side, wrapping a supportive arm around his shoulders.
"Are you alright, Grandpa?" she asked softly, her fierce corporate persona melting away into genuine familial concern.

"I am old, Emma," Walter whispered, looking around the cold, concrete room. "And my heart aches for the boy he used to be. But the rot is finally gone. The house is clean."
"The house is clean," Emma agreed, guiding him gently toward the stairs. "Let's go back upstairs where it's warm. Tomorrow, we start rebuilding."
