Chapter 4

The wide shot captured the immediate, visceral fallout of Emma's revelation. Emma smoothly removed the complete set of financial records from the thick tan envelope, squaring the edges of the papers against the mahogany table before extending them outward toward her grandfather. Elaine’s hand, which had been reaching for her crystal wineglass, instantly paused mid-air, trembling as her fingers hovered inches from the stem. The entire dining room held its collective breath, watching the papers bridge the gap between generations. Walter looked down at the extended documents, his chest heaving with a deep, rumbling anger that had been building for years. He slowly reached out, his weathered, liver-spotted fingers taking the stack of papers from his granddaughter’s hand. He didn't look at Richard or Elaine; his entire focus was fixed on the bank letterhead staring back at him. "I never authorized this," Walter whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and profound sorrow. "Not a single word of it. My trust covers all property taxes, structural maintenance, and resident living expenses in perpetuity. There has never been a cost-sharing requirement for family members. Never." "We only did it to secure her future, Dad!" Richard shouted desperately, throwing his hands up in a theatrical display of self-defense. "Prices have skyrocketed! Inflation is out of control! We wanted to teach her financial discipline so she wouldn't turn out like Uncle Marcus!" "Do not bring Marcus into this," Walter barked, his voice cracking with thunderous authority as he flipped open the first page of the ledger. "Marcus made his own mistakes, but he was never a thief hiding behind a family name and a forged medical clause." Elaine brought a trembling hand toward her mouth, her eyes darting frantically across the papers resting in Walter's hands as she realized the absolute totality of their exposure. "Emma, put those away," Elaine pleaded, her voice dropping into a pathetic, wheedling tone. "Let's not ruin Thanksgiving over a misunderstanding about accounting. We can discuss this privately in the study tomorrow morning like civilized adults."
