Chapter 2

The silence that followed Walter's question stretched thin and brittle over the Thanksgiving spread, broken only by the crackle of the nearby fireplace. Richard tried to regain his footing, shifting his weight between his shoes as he attempted to mask his panic beneath layers of parental superiority. "Look, Walter," Richard began, adopting a smooth, conciliatory tone that usually worked in corporate boardrooms. "Emma was living under our roof after the transition, and responsibilities have to be managed. A young adult needs to understand the real world. We didn't want her becoming soft or dependent on the family name. Charging a modest occupancy fee was simply part of her transition into true adulthood. It was for her own good, really." Emma didn't blink. She kept her breathing slow and controlled, refusing to let the familiar gaslighting rattle her nerves. She reached down, her fingers sliding over the textured paper of the thick tan envelope resting against her knees. She knew every single figure contained inside those pages, down to the exact cent. "Is that what you call a modest occupancy fee, Richard?" Emma asked, her voice dangerously calm, cutting cleanly through his excuses. "Charging market-rate luxury rent plus utilities, maintenance surcharges, and arbitrary administrative fees for a room in a house that Grandpa built, owned, and paid off thirty years ago? A house where I was explicitly invited to stay to recover from my medical leave?" Richard’s strained smile completely vanished, replaced by a dark, ugly flash of irritation. "You have no idea how much it costs to run an estate of this scale, Emma. We were doing you a favor by letting you stay here instead of forcing you out into a dangerous city apartment. You should be thanking us, not sitting here interrogating your father in front of the entire family on a holiday." Walter raised a single, weathered hand, cutting Richard off mid-sentence with a gesture that commanded absolute obedience. "Quiet, Richard," Walter instructed, his voice dropping into a register that made the room freeze. "Let the girl speak. I want to hear the exact numbers you decided were appropriate to extract from my granddaughter in my own home."
