Chapter 9 - Evelyn’s Desperation

While Robert lay shattered on the pavement, Evelyn Carter realized that her husband was a dead weight dragging her down into the abyss.
She had spent twenty years clawing her way from a social climbing secretary to the mistress of the Carter estate. She hadn't traded her youth and morals just to sleep on a cot in a municipal shelter.
Leaving Robert weeping on the sidewalk, Evelyn dragged Tristan by his arm into a nearby hotel lobby and immediately found a public terminal to compose an encrypted email.
She wasn't emailing Clara. She knew Clara was made of stone.
She was emailing Julian Sterling’s estranged uncle, Marcus Sterling—a man who had spent a decade trying to wrest control of the Sterling empire away from Julian.
*Marcus,* she typed rapidly, her manicured acrylic nails clattering frantically against the keys. *Robert kept private ledgers. Not just on Carter holdings, but on the offshore transactions your late brother executed before Julian inherited the throne. Clara and Julian think they've won. But if you back Tristan and me, I can give you the documentation to question Julian’s executive authority.*
She hit send, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
Beside her, Tristan was sweating, chewing his fingernails raw. "Mom, this is crazy. If Julian finds out we’re contacting Marcus, he won't just ruin us. He’ll put us in a cage."
"Julian has already ruined us!" Evelyn hissed, her eyes wild with malice. "We have nothing left! No house, no cars, no credit! Your father is a broken shell. If we don't play this card, Tristan, you’ll be working a retail counter for the rest of your pathetic life!"
Three minutes later, the terminal screen flashed with an incoming message.
*The Regency Bar. 6:00 PM. Come alone. If you are followed by Sterling security, you are on your own.*

Evelyn smiled a twisted, triumphant smile. "You see, Tristan? The Carter empire may be dead. But the Sterling empire has cracks of its own."
