Chapter 12 - The Sealed Safe in Geneva

At 11:30 PM, the storm finally hit Manhattan. Thunder rattled the thick glass of the penthouse as Julian and I stood in his private study, going over the encrypted files Arthur Pendelton had brought from the Swiss archives.
The phone on Julian’s desk rang—a secure, hardwired line that only three people in the world had access to.
Julian picked it up and hit the speaker.
"Speak."
"Julian. Nephew." The voice on the other end was smooth, refined, and laced with British arrogance. Marcus Sterling. "I hear you've had quite an eventful twenty-four hours. Dismantling an entire family over a few rude words at a baptism? You always were emotional, just like your father."
"You have ten seconds to tell me why you're calling from New York airspace, Marcus," Julian replied coldly.
A low, mocking laugh came through the speaker. "I'm calling to let you know that Evelyn Carter is remarkably generous when she's desperate. She handed over the master ledger Robert hid in Geneva. The one detailing the 1994 offshore consortium between your father and Margaret Carter."
I stepped closer to the phone. "That ledger was forged by Robert, Marcus. Any forensic analysis will prove it within hours."
"Perhaps," Marcus purred. "But forensic audits take time, Clara. And a preliminary injunction from the federal trade court takes about six minutes. By 8:00 AM tomorrow, Julian’s voting shares will be temporarily frozen by court order. The board will have no choice but to appoint me as interim chairman."
"You won't survive the week as chairman," Julian warned.
"I don't need a week, Julian. I only need forty-eight hours to liquidate the Carter assets you just seized and return them to Tristan—under my exclusive management, of course. Your little empire is about to be split in two."
Marcus paused, his voice turning into a venomous whisper.
"Oh, and Julian? There is one more thing in Robert’s private vault. A sealed medical file from twenty-four years ago. A DNA record regarding Clara’s true parentage."
My breath caught in my throat. I looked up at Julian, whose eyes were fixed on the phone with razor-sharp intensity.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, my pulse pounding in my ears.
"You really thought Robert hated you just because you reminded him of Margaret?" Marcus chuckled darkly. "Ask yourself, Clara... why did Robert let your mother suffer while raising you? You're not Robert’s daughter. You never were. And the man who fathered you left a legacy in Europe that makes the Sterling fortune look like pocket change... a legacy Robert has been hiding for two decades."
A sudden, sharp clap of thunder shook the tower.
"Enjoy your night, children," Marcus whispered. "Tomorrow morning, the real war begins."
May you like
The line went dead.
In the heavy silence of the study, Julian and I stood frozen, the storm howling against the glass, realizing that the fall of Robert Carter was only the opening skirmish of a battle far larger, darker, and more dangerous than we had ever imagined.
