Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

At 11:00 AM, the Carter International boardroom was in a state of absolute chaos.
Twelve board members, all old-money cronies handpicked by Robert to rubber-stamp his embezzlements, were shouting over one another. Rumors of the overnight asset transfer had leaked to Bloomberg, and Carter International’s stock was tumbling down thirty-two percent in pre-market trading.
The doors swung open.
Silence slammed down on the room like a lead weight.
I walked in first, wearing a tailored midnight-blue suit, my spine straight, exuding the quiet, lethal grace my grandmother had spent my childhood teaching me. Behind me walked Julian Sterling, flanked by four senior partners from the city’s top corporate litigation firm.
"What is this?" demanded Douglas Vance, Robert’s closest ally on the board, leaping to his feet. "This is a closed executive session! Clara, you may be Robert's daughter, but you have no standing here! Get out before security removes you!"
Julian didn't even look at him. He simply pulled out a leather executive chair at the head of the table and held it for me. I sat down slowly, folding my hands over the mahogany surface.
"Security has already been replaced, Mr. Vance," I said calmly. "And as of 9:00 AM today, Robert Carter holds zero shares in this conglomerate. The Margaret Carter Heritage Trust controls sixty-eight percent of voting equity."
"That's impossible!" another director shouted. "Robert would never sign—"
"Robert signed last night at our front gate to avoid spending his seventy-first birthday in a federal detention center," Julian said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, quiet register that made billionaires sweat. "Though, considering the documents we uncovered this morning regarding the 2008 environmental cover-ups, that fate may simply be delayed by forty-eight hours."
Color drained from Douglas Vance’s face. He sank back into his seat, his hands trembling.
"Effective immediately," I announced, projecting my voice across the frozen room, "the board of directors is dissolved. Every contract, dividend, and executive bonus issued under Robert Carter’s tenure is suspended pending forensic review. Those who cooperate with our forensic team may retain their personal pensions. Those who resist... will be referred directly to the Southern District of New York by noon."

Not a single man spoke. Every pair of eyes dropped to the mahogany table in absolute surrender.
