Chapter 4 - The Lockout at Dawn

The morning sun over the Carter ancestral estate did not bring warmth; it brought a cold, cutting reckoning.

At precisely 8:45 AM, three unmarked black vans pulled into the circular driveway of the ninety-room stone manor in Greenwich. Robert Carter had barely slept, pacing the Italian marble floors in his silk robe, clutching a crystal tumbler of scotch. Beside him, his wife, Evelyn, was screeching into her phone, trying in vain to reach country club board members who had already blocked her number.

"What do you mean the credit lines are frozen?!" Evelyn shrieked, slamming her phone onto the mahogany breakfast table. "Robert, do something! Tristan was supposed to put a deposit on a yacht in Monaco today!"

"Quiet!" Robert barked, his face hollow, grey, and sweating. "You don't understand what happened last night. You don't understand who Clara married."

Before Evelyn could fire back, the heavy double doors of the manor swung open without a knock.

Six private security contractors wearing black suits and discreet Sterling Global lapel pins walked into the foyer, flanked by two municipal marshals and a woman with silver hair holding a sleek leather folder.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls. "Get out of our house! Robert, call the police!"

"The police are currently stationed at your gate to ensure a peaceful transition, Mrs. Carter," the silver-haired woman stated crisply. She stepped forward, presenting a stamped writ of immediate possession. "I am Eleanor Vance, lead counsel for Clara Sterling. Under Clause Nine of the original Carter Family Trust, which was fully executed at midnight, this property is the sole, unencumbered asset of the late Margaret Carter’s direct heir."

"I am the heir!" Tristan shouted, stumbling down the spiral staircase in silk pajamas, looking hungover and furious. "I'm Robert's son! Clara is nothing! She was cast out three years ago!"

"Clara was cast out with nothing, but her grandmother wrote a lineage clause that could never be broken by an illegitimate will," Eleanor Vance replied without blinking. "As of 9:00 AM, you are trespassing on private property owned by the Sterling Foundation. You have twenty minutes to collect essential personal effects. All jewelry, artwork, and vehicles acquired after Margaret Carter’s passing are subject to asset freeze and forensic audit."

Robert slumped into an antique armchair, looking like a man awaiting the guillotine. "She won't even give me forty-eight hours?"

"Mrs. Sterling gave you fifteen years," Eleanor Vance said coolly. "Your twenty minutes started two minutes ago."
