Chapter 5 - The Favored Son’s Tantrum

Tristan Carter had never worked an honest forty-hour week in his twenty-six years of life. He drove custom Ferraris, maintained a penthouse overlooking Central Park, and mocked Clara relentlessly throughout their childhood, confident that his gender and his mother’s manipulations secured his reign forever.

Now, standing on the curbside in front of the grand iron gates he used to own, Tristan looked like a feral animal trapped in designer clothes.

His mother, Evelyn, sat on an overturned Louis Vuitton suitcase, weeping hysterically into a silk handkerchief, while two moving trucks watched over by armed Sterling guards prevented them from taking anything larger than a briefcase.

"This is impossible!" Tristan roared, pulling out his phone and dialing Clara’s private number. For the first time in his life, he didn't expect to be sent to voicemail.

To his shock, the line connected on the second ring.

"Clara! You vindictive, jealous little snake!" Tristan screamed, his voice cracking on the quiet Greenwich street. "You think you can throw our parents onto the street like dogs? Who the hell do you think you are? You married a rich thug and now you think you run New York?!"

A cold, amused laugh echoed through the receiver, but it wasn't Clara.

"You speak to your sister with remarkable bravery for someone whose offshore accounts were flagged by Interpol forty minutes ago, Tristan."

Tristan froze. The ice in Julian Sterling’s voice had chilled heads of state; directed at a spoiled playboy, it was fatal.

"J-Julian..." Tristan stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "Look, this is a family matter. Clara doesn't understand business. My father made mistakes, sure, but Clara wouldn't want her brother left on the street—"

"You are not her brother," Julian interrupted ruthlessly. "You are the biological consequence of Robert's infidelity while Margaret Carter lay dying. And as for your business acumen, Tristan... we just reviewed the shell corporations you set up in the Cayman Islands to siphon money from the logistics division. Did you really believe no one would notice a forty-million-dollar hole?"

Tristan’s knees buckled. "That was... that was an investment vehicle—"

"That was federal embezzlement," Clara’s voice cut in, smooth and unyielding. "You have thirty minutes before the press conference at Carter International headquarters, Tristan. I suggest you tell Evelyn to pawn whatever jewelry she managed to stuff into her pockets, because by noon, the Carter name won't be worth the ink on a bounced check."

The call clicked dead. Tristan dropped his phone onto the asphalt, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks.
