Chapter 11 - The Wolf at the Door

The air in the room cooled instantly. Arthur Pendelton froze, his glass hovering halfway to his mouth.

Marcus Sterling was Julian’s paternal uncle—a ruthless corporate raider who had been exiled to the London offices five years ago after attempting a hostile takeover of Sterling Global while Julian’s father was on life support. He was cunning, utterly devoid of conscience, and commanded a multi-billion-dollar shadow syndicate in Europe.

"So, the rats are seeking shelter with the hyena," Julian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, measured calm. He gently placed sleeping Leo into the waiting arms of our head nanny, who immediately carried our son toward the fortified nursery wing.

"Marcus has been waiting for an excuse to return to New York," I said, my mind racing through the corporate ramifications. "Robert must have told Evelyn about old financial records. Could there be anything in the old Carter archives that Marcus could use against your family's trust?"

Julian stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city lights reflected in his eyes like shards of broken glass.

"When my father built the transatlantic shipping corridors thirty years ago, he partnered briefly with your grandmother, Margaret," Julian explained slowly. "Robert was only an accountant at the time. If Robert kept unauthorized duplicate logs of those early shipping manifests, Marcus could claim that the initial seed funding for Sterling Global came from an unregistered Carter partnership."

"Which would give Marcus legal standing to challenge your control of Sterling Global in probate court," Eleanor Vance finished grimly. "It wouldn't win in the long run, but it would freeze Julian’s executive voting power for months—long enough for Marcus to launch a hostile takeover with his European consortium."

"They're playing their final card," I said, a dangerous fire igniting in my chest. "They think because they couldn't break me with cruelty, they can break us through you."

"They will find," Julian said, turning to face me with a cold, feral smile, "that challenging both of us together is the fastest way to ensure their total annihilation."
