Chapter 40 - Shadows Across the Bosporus

The *Nathan James* took the hit on her port quarter, just above the waterline.
The concussive shockwave slammed me against the steel bulkheads of the bridge, sending tactical charts and monitors flying. The smell of burning insulation and ruptured jet fuel filled the compartment instantly.
"Damage control report!" I yelled, coughing through the rising smoke as I pulled myself up using the command console.
"Auxiliary engine room flooded!" the damage control officer reported over the sound of screaming sirens. "Fire in compartment delta-four! Port rudder responding at fifty percent! But the hull is intact—the armor plating took the brunt of the kinetic impact!"
"Where are those container ships?" I demanded, wiping a trickle of blood from my brow.
"Destroyed, sir!" Miller reported from the secondary weapons console. "Our strike group cruisers just fired a coordinated Tomahawk salvo. All three hostile freighters have been neutralized."
"And the prisoner?"
Miller froze. He touched his tactical earpiece. "Security team in the brig... respond. Brig security, report!"
Static crackled over the radio. Then, a low, guttural voice with a heavy accent spoke through the command frequency:
*"Admiral Vance. You fight very well for a boy who grew up in the trash."*
My heart turned to absolute stone.
"Who is this?" I demanded.
*"I am the one who purchased your aunt Eleanor's contracts thirty years ago,"* the voice replied, calm, cultured, and devoid of fear. *"Your aunt is dead, Ethan. We slit her throat thirty seconds before the first missile hit your hull. She had served her purpose. She brought you into the trap."*
"You killed her?"
*"A loose thread is a dangerous thread. But she left us the primary decryption key for your father's true vault. The one in Istanbul. The one hidden beneath the Basilica Cistern. Did you really think your father only stole nuclear triggers, Admiral? Arthur Vance stole the sovereign ledger of the entire Cold War shadow treasury."*
A single gunshot echoed through the earpiece. The brig comms went dead.
"Miller! Ramirez!" I ordered, my eyes burning with lethal fury. "Take an assault chalk to the brig! Clear the lower decks!"
"On it!" Miller bolted through the armored hatch, assault rifle raised.
Hayes stood beside me, his uniform charred, staring at the navigational display of the Aegean Sea. "Ethan... if they have the ledger in Istanbul, they can collapse the sovereign debt of twelve NATO nations overnight. This was never about Bradley’s petty greed or your mother’s sick jealousy. They used your family’s domestic dysfunction as a smoke screen to cover a thirty-year financial coup."
"Bradley was a clown," I said, my teeth grinding so hard they threatened to crack. "My mother was a spiteful parasite. But the men behind them are wolves. And wolves only understand one language."

I pressed the ship's priority transponder. "Set course for the Turkish straits. Call the Joint Chiefs. Tell them the Fourth Fleet is going to war."
