Chapter 17 - The Shadow of Constanța

"Target acquired!" the helicopter pilot called out over the intercom. "Ten o'clock, two nautical miles out! The *Vanguard Star* is running completely dark—no navigation lights, no AIS transponder signal."

I leaned out the side door, peering into the curtain of driving rain.

Emerging from the black swells was a colossal container ship, nearly eight hundred feet of rust-streaked steel cutting through the whitecaps. Its massive cranes stood like skeletal giants against the low-hanging thunderclouds. As our pilot had warned, the vessel was a ghost ship—running in total violation of maritime safety laws, racing toward international waters.

"Look at the stern," Hayes pointed down.

Two black-hulled rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) were trailing the ship’s wake like escort wolves, mounted with heavy machine guns.

"Coast Guard cutter *Dependable* is six miles out, closing fast, but they won't make the intercept before the ship crosses into international territory," the pilot informed us.

"We aren't waiting for the cutter," I said. "Master Chief, initiate boarding protocol Alpha."

"Fast-roping into sixty-knot wind gusts onto a moving container stack?" Hayes asked, his eyes gleaming with focused adrenaline. "My favorite Tuesday morning."

The Black Hawk flared its rotors, engine turbines screaming as it decelerated into a hover directly over the towering rows of shipping containers stacked on the *Vanguard Star*’s aft deck.

Instantaneously, flashes of orange muzzle fire erupted from the catwalks below. The mercenaries on deck were shooting blind into the storm, their rounds pinging harmlessly off the helicopter’s armored belly.

"Door gunner, suppress that catwalk!" Hayes commanded.

The Black Hawk’s M134 Minigun roared to life—a devastating, continuous chainsaw rip of lead that traced red tracer lines down through the ship’s superstructure. The catwalk railing shattered under the hail of heavy fire, throwing two armed men over the side and into the foaming sea below.

"Ropes out! Go, go, go!"

Thick braided ropes dropped from both sides of the cabin.

Without hesitation, Hayes grabbed the line and slid down into the tempest. I was right behind him, gloves smoking against the friction as I dropped twenty-five feet onto the slick, pitching surface of an emerald-green shipping container.

We hit the metal deck, detached our harness straps, and formed an immediate security perimeter.

Four DEVGRU operators dropped down behind us like lethal phantoms, carbines up, sweeping the rain-swept container aisles.

"Bridge is fifty meters forward," Hayes shouted over the howl of the wind. "Engine room access is down the central hatch. Derek will be on the bridge—it’s the only place he can ensure the captain doesn't throttle down."

"Move," I commanded.

We sprinted across the metal container roofs, jumping the three-foot gaps between stacks as the massive ship rolled violently in the heavy seas.
