Chapter 11 - The Knock on the Steel Door

Three days later, the chaos of the gala had receded into the disciplined routine of naval command.
I stood in my private office on the sixth floor of the Naval Special Warfare Operations Command in Norfolk. The room was sparse, utilitarian, and quiet. Outside the floor-to-ceiling reinforced windows, the gray Atlantic stretched endlessly toward the horizon, gray battleships and guided-missile destroyers cutting white wakes through the choppy swell.
On my desk sat the restored wooden chest that my sister Amber had retrieved from the pawnshop with the funds I provided. It was my grandfather's chest, made of polished mahogany, smelling faintly of cedar and salt air. Inside, his World War II service medals were pinned neatly against velvet, untouched and restored to their rightful place of honor.
I traced my fingers over the brass latch, feeling a sense of closure that had eluded me for a decade. The eviction was complete. Derek was awaiting arraignment in a federal detention center with bail denied. Patricia was living in a state-run transitional facility, completely stripped of her social standing and wealth. The justice had been swift, total, and absolute.
Then, a sharp knock sounded against the reinforced steel door of my office.
"Enter," I called out.
The door swung open, and Master Chief Hayes stepped inside. His face was unusually grim, stripped of the satisfaction he had displayed during the gala. He wasn't carrying routine administrative folders. He was holding a heavy, classified dispatch pouch sealed with red diplomatic wax and stamped with the personal seal of the Office of Naval Intelligence.
"Admiral," Hayes said, closing the heavy door firmly behind him and engaging the acoustic privacy lock. "We have a situation."
I straightened my posture, my military instincts flaring instantly. "Report, Master Chief."
"The forensic team finished scraping Derek's private offshore servers two hours ago," Hayes said, walking over and placing the sealed pouch on my desk. "The wire fraud and the defense contract embezzlement were just the surface, ma'am. That wasn't where Derek lost the money."
I looked down at the red wax seal. "Explain."
"Derek wasn't gambling on legitimate market derivatives," Hayes said, his voice dropping to a low, tense whisper. "He was laundering money for a black-market syndicate operating out of the Port of Constanța in Romania. The syndicate is a front for an unregistered arms pipeline moving high-grade military ordnance through civilian shipping lanes."
I felt the air in the room grow cold. "And how does that connect to my family?"
"Your father didn't die of natural respiratory failure, Admiral," Hayes revealed, his eyes locking onto mine with devastating intensity. "The preliminary toxicology report Arthur recovered from St. Jude’s Hospice was altered. Richard Vance had discovered that Derek’s shipping line was being used to smuggle stolen naval guidance chips. He was gathering evidence to turn over to federal authorities the week he was hospitalized."
My blood ran like ice water through my veins. "What are you saying, Hayes?"
Hayes stepped closer, pointing to the red-sealed dispatch.
"Your father was poisoned with a military-grade neurotoxin disguised as late-stage pulmonary edema, ma'am. Derek didn't just steal from him. Derek was silenced by the syndicate to keep the pipeline open—and Patricia was paid three hundred thousand dollars in cash two days before Richard died to make sure no autopsy was ever performed."

Before I could process the monstrous revelation, Hayes’s encrypted field radio chirped sharply on his shoulder harness. He tapped the receiver, listened for three seconds, and his expression turned to pure stone.
"Admiral," Hayes said, lowering the radio, his hand dropping to the sidearm at his belt. "The transport carrying Derek Vance to the federal courthouse in Alexandria was just ambushed on Interstate 95 by an armed tactical team. Derek is gone, three federal marshals are down, and our perimeter sensors just detected an unauthorized breach at the south gate of this facility."
