Chapter 10 - The Price of Arrogance

By sunrise the next morning, the story had broken across every major news network in the state.

The headlines were merciless:

*DEFENSE CONTRACTOR ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING NAVAL ADMIRAL AT CHARITY GALA.*

*FOUR-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD RING EXPOSED IN VANCE FAMILY LOGISTICS SCANDAL.*

*EVICTION PROCEEDINGS INITIATED AGAINST SOCIALITE PATRICIA VANCE.*

Outside the gates of the Crestview Drive estate, three white moving vans with official county sheriff markings were already parked along the curb. Two uniformed deputies stood at the front porch, overseeing the changing of the heavy brass locks on the front door.

A small crowd of neighbors, people who had attended Patricia’s lavish garden parties for years, stood at the edge of the manicured lawn, whispering and snapping photos with their phones.

Patricia sat on the curb beside two battered cardboard boxes—the only items she had been permitted to pack before the deputies escorted her off the porch. Her designer luggage had been seized by federal marshals as assets subject to restitution forfeiture. She was wearing an old trench coat, shivering in the early morning mist, her gaze fixed on the front door she had walked through as a proud matriarch for thirty years.

A sleek black government sedan pulled up to the curb. The tinted window rolled down halfway.

Arthur Vance sat in the back seat, holding a clipboard. He looked down at Patricia with cold detachment.

"Your court date is set for the fourteenth, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said through the opening. "Your public defender will contact you at the temporary shelter address you provided."

"A shelter?" Patricia croaked, looking up with hollow, dead eyes. "Arthur, please. Tell Elena to let me stay in the guest cottage. Just the guest cottage! I have nowhere to go! My friends won't answer my calls! The club canceled my membership!"

"The guest cottage has been designated as temporary housing for wounded veterans undergoing outpatient therapy at the naval medical center," Arthur replied without an ounce of warmth. "And Admiral Vance has made it explicitly clear: if you step one foot onto this property, you will be arrested for criminal trespass under federal statute."

Patricia reached out, clutching the edge of the car door with trembling hands. "What about Derek? They're talking about fifteen years in federal prison! He won't survive in there, Arthur! He's fragile! He needs his medication!"

"Derek should have considered the consequences before he struck an Admiral and stole millions from the men and women who protect this country," Arthur said simply.

The window rolled back up, sealing Patricia out in the cold morning air. The sedan accelerated smoothly, leaving her alone on the curb as the locksmith’s power drill echoed sharply from the porch, permanently locking her out of the life she had built on cruelty and lies.
