Chapter 40 - The Midnight Masquerade

Charleston, South Carolina, gleamed under a heavy autumn rain. The historic Hibernian Hall was aglow with warm gas lanterns, its grand stone pillars flanked by private security details in tailored black suits. Sleek limousines lined Meeting Street, dropping off the quiet elite of global finance, corrupt politicians, and old-money dynasties.

Inside, beneath crystal chandeliers and marble cornices, an orchestra played soft classical waltzes while men and women in silk tuxedos and evening gowns drank champagne, unaware that their world was about to collapse.

I stood before the floor-length mirror in the private suite Vance had secured across the square. I wore an emerald-green velvet evening dress, high-necked and tailored, hiding the Kevlar lining Vance had insisted upon. My hair was swept into an elegant chignon, exposing the delicate line of my neck where my father’s pocket watch hung like a talisman on a silver chain.

"Chloe is safe with Thomas at a secured federal safe house outside the city," Madison said, stepping into the room wearing a sleek midnight-blue gown. She held a concealed folder of notarized federal warrants. "The marshals are staged two blocks away. They are waiting for your signal."

Vance walked up behind me, impeccably dressed in a black tuxedo. He looked every bit the formidable heir of the Sterling empire, yet his eyes held only devotion to me.

He placed his hands gently on my shoulders. "When you walk through those doors, Rachel, they will see the woman they thought they could break in divorce court. They thought you were a helpless young mother with a six-week-old infant, easily discarded."

I turned, meeting his fierce gaze. "And what will they see tonight?"

"The rightful heir," Vance smiled grimly. "The matriarch who will destroy them."

We crossed the cobblestone street under umbrellas, ascending the grand steps of Hibernian Hall. At the entrance, two hulking security guards with earpieces moved to block our path.

"Invitations, sir?" the lead guard demanded.

Vance stepped forward, radiating the chilling aristocratic authority he had inherited from his lineage. "Tell Victor Sterling that his nephew Vance has arrived. And tell him I’ve brought the owner of everything he intends to sell tonight."

The guard's eyes widened. Before he could reach for his radio, Vance brushed past him, leading Madison and me straight into the gilded heart of the ballroom.
