Chapter 27 - The Autumn Herald

The vault door swung open with a hiss of pressurized air, revealing a compact interior lined with velvet drawers and glowing server drives. But before I could take a step forward, the shrill wail of a perimeter alarm ripped through the stone corridors above us.

Gunfire shattered the silence of the night.

"They're here," Clara said, her eyes flashing with cold rage rather than fear. "The equinox is not for three days, yet they have broken the truce."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Vance! Madison!"

"Your federal watchdog is already engaging them," Clara said, pulling a discreet lever hidden beneath a bronze sconce. A heavy blast door slammed shut behind us, sealing the vault chamber from the upper stairs. "The Black Iris has sent their clean-up crew. But they did not come alone. Look at the monitors."

She pointed to a bank of security screens set into the vault wall. Through the falling snow outside the mansion, several tactical teams dressed in black combat gear were advancing across the courtyard. Vance was returning fire from behind the SUV, his rifle spitting bursts of flame, while Madison sheltered Chloe’s spare gear inside the vehicle.

Leading the assault was a man who looked shockingly, terrifyingly familiar.

Tall, broad-shouldered, with the same cruel jawline and cold aristocratic eyes as Daniel. But this man was older, his face scarred along the cheekbone, moving with military precision that Daniel had never possessed.

"Julian Sterling," Clara spat. "Evelyn’s firstborn son. Daniel’s elder half-brother. The family claimed he died in a boating accident in Monaco ten years ago. In truth, he was running black operations for the syndicate in Eastern Europe."

"Daniel never told me he had a brother," I gasped, clutching Chloe tighter against me.

"Daniel was a petulant child kept on a leash to manage public relations," Clara said. "Julian is the butcher. He has come to take the ledger and eliminate every witness to the family’s survival."

On the monitor, Julian raised a hand, signaling his men to hold fire. He stepped into the beam of the courtyard floodlights, holding a megaphone to his lips. His voice filtered through the security audio system, chillingly calm.

"Rachel!" Julian’s voice echoed down into the vault. "You played a brilliant game in Manhattan. My mother was foolish to underestimate a mother’s rage, and my brother was a weak, pathetic coward who deserved every year of his federal sentence. But you are out of your jurisdiction now. Hand over Arthur Campbell’s ledger and the child, and I will let your sister and your federal lover walk off this mountain alive."

I turned back to the open vault. Sitting on the center shelf was a slim, titanium-cased drive beside an ancient leather-bound ledger handwritten in my father’s unmistakable cursive script.

"What do we do?" I asked Clara, adrenaline flooding my veins.

Clara smiled, an icy, predatory grin. "Julian thinks this fortress has only one door. Arthur Campbell built this estate, Rachel. He built it with an emergency tunnel leading through the mountain face directly to the St. Moritz rail terminal. But you cannot run forever. If Julian takes this ledger, he will use its secrets to buy Daniel’s freedom from federal custody."

"Over my dead body," I snarled.

"Then take the ledger," Clara handed me the titanium drive, "and let us show Julian Sterling why the Campbell name was feared long before he was born."
