Chapter 18 - The Bloodline Clause

Madison parked the SUV deep inside a commercial storage facility outside White Plains, killing the engine beneath the hum of industrial fluorescent lights.
Chloe was finally fed, warm, and asleep in a makeshift nest of blankets on the back seat. I sat in the front, my hands trembling as I opened the folder Madison had handed me.
"Explain this," I demanded.
"When your father set up your trust," Madison began, pointing to a highlighted paragraph on the yellowing legal parchment, "he didn't just leave you the Dutchess property and his pension. Thirty years ago, your father and Marcus Sterling were venture partners in maritime freight. Marcus betrayed your father, stole his patents, and used that capital to build Sterling Global Logistics."
The room spun slightly. "My father never told me that."
"Because he was playing the long game," Madison said. "Your father successfully filed a sealed constructive trust in Delaware federal court. The legal stipulation states that if Marcus Sterling or any of his direct heirs are ever convicted of federal felony racketeering, eighty percent of the Sterling Global parent shares automatically revert to your father’s legal bloodline."
The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity.
"Chloe," I whispered.
"Not just you, Rachel. Chloe is the sole surviving descendant carrying both bloodlines through your marriage," Madison said. "If you and Chloe die before Marcus's formal sentencing, the reversion clause is voided. The entire fortune diverts to a Swiss holding company owned exclusively by Evelyn and Daniel. Daniel needs Chloe dead—or in his physical custody outside US jurisdiction—to claim that fortune before the gavel falls next week."
Suddenly, Madison’s burner phone buzzed against the dashboard.
The screen displayed an encrypted incoming video call from a blocked IP address in Geneva.
"It's Evelyn," Madison breathed.
I reached out and pressed the green button.
The screen flickered. Evelyn Sterling’s immaculate, aristocratic face filled the screen. Despite the hour, her silver hair was coiffed, her silk blouse immaculate. But behind the veneer, her eyes were sunken, frantic, cornered.
"Madison, darling," Evelyn’s voice purred smoothly. "I see you found our little runaway."
I pulled the phone toward my face, leaning into the camera with cold, unyielding malice. "Hello, Evelyn."
Evelyn froze. For a fraction of a second, the mask slipped, revealing sheer venom. "Rachel. You really are like a cockroach, aren't you? Impossible to eradicate."

"Your son failed," I said coldly. "My daughter is safe. And the marshals are currently hunting Daniel like an animal in the woods."
Evelyn let out a brittle, sharp laugh. "Is that what you think, girl? Look out the window of your little hideaway."
