Chapter 15 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The floorboards in the hallway groaned.

Vance didn't hesitate. He pulled me behind him, gesturing toward Chloe’s crib with his free hand. "Take your daughter. Now."

I scooped Chloe into my arms. Woken by the commotion, her tiny lips parted, ready to unleash a piercing cry. Instinct took over; I pressed her gently against my chest, slipping my pinky finger into her mouth so she could nurse on instinct, muffling her whimpers against the fabric of my sweater. She trembled against my skin, her tiny heartbeat fluttering like a trapped sparrow.

"Vance," I whispered, panic clawing at my throat. "There's no back stairs. We’re trapped."

"Your father didn't just build stone walls, Rachel," Vance muttered, his weapon trained dead-center on the closed nursery door. "He was military intelligence before he ever bought this orchard. Check the wardrobe floor. The brass ring."

A heavy kick splintered the nursery door. The wood buckled, hinges groaning under the force.

I bolted to the massive antique mahogany wardrobe in the corner. Tearing the hanging blankets aside, my frantic hands swept across the bottom cedar panel until my nails caught a recessed brass ring. I pulled with all my strength. A hidden trapdoor lifted silently, revealing a narrow vertical shaft with iron rungs leading straight into the foundation cellar.

A second kick blew the nursery door inward off its upper hinge.

A masked mercenary stepped into the doorway, assault rifle raised. Vance fired twice in rapid succession. The concussive blast in the small room was deafening. The intruder collapsed backward into the hall with a choked gasp.

"Go! Down, Rachel! Move!" Vance barked, stepping into the doorway to return fire against shadows advancing down the corridor.

Holding Chloe tightly against my collarbone with one arm, I swung my legs into the chute. The cold iron rungs bit into my bare feet as I scrambled downward into the subterranean darkness. Gunfire erupted above me—sharp, chaotic cracks that rained plaster dust through the floorboards onto my hair.

I reached the dirt floor of the cellar just as a deafening thud resonated above, followed by a voice that chilled my blood to absolute zero.

"Rachel!" Daniel’s voice echoed down through the open chute, ragged, manic, stripped of every ounce of aristocratic polish. "You took my name! You took my family’s empire! You think a badge can save you? Bring my daughter out, or I will burn this house to ash with both of you inside!"
