Chapter 32 - Fire on the Danube

The rain poured down over Vienna in blinding sheets, turning the cobblestone quays along the Danube into slick mirrors of black and silver.

Our black armored van tore through the night, tires screeching against the wet asphalt. Vance was at the wheel, expertly maneuvering through narrow alleyways to shake off two pursuit vehicles that had chased us from the palace district.

In the back of the van, Madison held Chloe wrapped tightly against her chest, rocking the baby while speaking in soft, soothing whispers over the roar of the engine. Chloe let out a small whimper, but she did not cry; she felt her aunt’s warmth, anchoring her through the madness.

"Two pursuit SUVs on our six!" Vance shouted over his shoulder. "Black Mercedes, armed with automatic weapons. They're trying to pin us against the river before we reach the diplomatic airfield!"

"How much further to the bridge?" I asked, racking the slide of the 9mm Vance had given me.

"Two miles," Vance answered, taking a sharp left turn that sent the van skidding sideways before gripping the asphalt again. "Once we cross the Reichsbrücke, the Austrian Federal Police under legitimate command will close the barricades behind us. But we have to make it across first."

A burst of automatic gunfire shattered the back window of our van. Glass rained down across the metal floor. Madison ducked, shielding Chloe with her entire body.

"Stay down!" I screamed.

I crawled to the shattered rear window. Through the rain and the glare of high beams, I saw the lead Mercedes pulling up alongside our rear bumper. Julian Sterling was hanging out of the passenger window, his face wrapped in a blood-soaked linen bandage, wielding an assault rifle with wild, psychotic fury.

He was a dying monster lashing out with his final breath.

"Give me the child, Rachel!" Julian’s scream cut through the roar of the wind. "If the Sterlings burn, you burn with us!"

He raised his rifle, aiming directly at the compartment where Madison sheltered Chloe.

Time slowed to an absolute standstill.

I saw my six-week-old daughter lying in the divorce court nursery. I saw Daniel’s cold smirk as he took my house, my savings, my dignity. I saw Evelyn sneering at me across mahogany conference tables, treating my flesh and blood like a piece of commercial property.

*Never again.*

Leaning through the shattered glass into the howling storm, I raised my 9mm with both hands, aligned the front sight with the front tire of Julian’s speeding Mercedes, and squeezed the trigger three times.

*Crack! Crack! Crack!*

The front-left tire of the Mercedes shredded violently. The vehicle violently veered to the right, scraping against the steel guardrail of the river embankment with a shower of brilliant orange sparks. Julian lost his footing, his rifle flying into the dark abyss of the Danube, as the Mercedes flipped end over end, crashing through the concrete barrier and plummeting into the churning black waters below.

The second pursuit vehicle slammed on its brakes, tires smoking, turning around in full retreat into the shadows of the city.

Silence fell over our van, save for the rhythmic clatter of rain against the roof and the sound of my own ragged, triumphant breathing.

Vance pulled the van onto the center of the Reichsbrücke. Flashing blue and red lights illuminated the bridge ahead—six Austrian federal police cruisers and two armored diplomatic transports, their officers standing at attention with rifles raised, securing the safe corridor.

Vance brought the van to a halt, pulled the handbrake, and turned around in his seat.

He looked at Madison. He looked at me. His eyes were shining with overwhelming relief, respect, and something deep and tender that took my breath away.

"You did it, Rachel," Vance whispered. "It's done."
