Chapter 28 - Poison in the Chalice

The mountain tunnel was narrow, damp, and freezing, lit only by low-voltage emergency lamps. Vance had broken through our extraction line just in time, neutralizing three of Julian’s scouts in the courtyard before blowing the lower terrace gates to join us underground.

We emerged two hours later inside an abandoned freight depot outside Chur, where a discrete diplomatic transport arranged by Vance’s federal contacts awaited us. By dawn, we had crossed into Austria, disappearing into the winding, cobblestone alleys of Vienna’s historic First District.

We took shelter in a safehouse belonging to the U.S. Embassy—a high-ceilinged, secure apartment overlooking the Danube Canal.

Madison was exhausted, sitting on the plush rug, softly singing Chloe to sleep. Chloe’s cheek was flushed from the cold mountain air, but she was safe, her tiny breathing regular and peaceful.

"We have Julian’s comms tapped," Vance said, walking into the living room, stripping off his blood-stained tactical vest. He poured three cups of black coffee from a silver pot. "He didn't find the ledger in St. Moritz. Clara detonated the manor’s lower gallery behind us, burying the vault under fifty tons of Alpine rock. Julian knows you have the titanium drive."

"Where is Clara now?" I asked, taking a hot cup with both hands.

"She slipped away through a second egress," Vance said. "The Austrian counter-terrorism unit is monitoring her estate. But Rachel... Julian isn't just hunting you with guns. Look at this."

He tossed an encrypted tablet onto the coffee table. On the screen was a draft of an international red notice issued by an Interpol bureau in Lyon, France.

"What is this?" Madison asked, looking up.

"It’s an emergency arrest warrant," Vance said, his jaw tightening with controlled rage. "Signed by a rogue magistrate in Paris on the syndicate’s payroll. They’re claiming Rachel abducted Chloe internationally, alleging that Daniel’s family has legal custody under European civil law. If local Austrian police raid this apartment, they won't shoot us—they’ll hand Chloe directly to Julian’s legal team under diplomatic escort."

"They're using the law against us again," I said, my blood turning to ice. "Just like Evelyn did in Manhattan."

"Worse," Vance said. "They slipped a digital trace onto our embassy relay. Thirty minutes ago, a courier dropped off a package at the downstairs lobby addressed to you."

Vance stepped over to the entryway table, where a silver ice bucket held a bottle of vintage Austrian champagne and a sealed black envelope stamped with the emblem of an iris.

"Is it a bomb?" Madison asked, instinctively pulling Chloe closer.

"No," Vance said, his eyes darkening. "Our bomb-sniffing sensors cleared it. It's biological. The cork in this champagne bottle was laced with concentrated digitalis—foxglove toxin. One sip, or even breathing the vapor in an enclosed room, would have induced cardiac arrest within ten minutes. Julian isn't trying to capture you anymore, Rachel. He wants to execute you, take Chloe into syndicate guardianship, and claim the Campbell trusts as her legal custodian."

I walked over to the envelope. Using a dining knife, I sliced open the wax seal.

Inside was an antique ballroom invitation printed in gold leaf:

*The Hofburg Palace. Autumn Equinox Charity Gala. Tonight at 8:00 PM. Deliver the ledger to Box Four, or your sister will not survive the night.*

Beneath the text was a surveillance photo of Madison taken less than twenty minutes ago, through the safehouse window, with a red laser sight aligned precisely over her heart.
