Chapter 47 - A Knock at the Gate

The evening of the charity gala arrived with a splendor unseen on the Newport coast in half a century.
Vance Manor blazed with warm, inviting light from every window. Luxury sedans and vintage carriages lined the grand driveway, carrying senators, philanthropists, and business leaders who had come to pay homage to the resurrected Vance dynasty.
Inside the grand ballroom, a live string quartet played softly in the corner, while crystal glasses clinked and laughter filled the vaulted ceilings. Claire moved through the crowd like royalty—poised, elegant, and effortlessly in control.
Suddenly, a commotion echoed from the grand foyer.
Marcus stepped through the crowd, hurrying over to Claire with a concerned frown. “Claire, you need to see this. Security just stopped someone at the outer gate who managed to bypass the perimeter.”
Claire raised an eyebrow. “Who?”
“It’s Daniel,” Marcus said, his voice dropping low. “He looks... destroyed. He’s soaked, disheveled, and screaming your name. He managed to evade the police warrants for corporate fraud long enough to take a Greyhound bus down from Boston.”
Claire took a slow sip of sparkling water, her expression entirely unreadable. “Bring him in. Let him see what he threw away.”
Ten minutes later, two security guards hauled a shivering, disheveled Daniel Sterling into the brilliant light of the grand ballroom. His expensive suit was stained with mud and cheap liquor, his hair matted to his forehead, and his eyes wild with desperate, hollow madness.
The music stopped. The entire room went dead silent, fifty elite guests turning to stare in stunned disbelief at the pathetic wreck standing in the center of the polished marble floor.
Daniel locked eyes with Claire, who stood atop the raised dais near the grand staircase, looking down at him like a goddess passing judgment on a mortal worm.
“Claire!” Daniel sobbed, taking a stumbling step forward before the guards pinned his arms back. “Please! You have to help me! The federal marshals are closing in! My mother is sick! I lost everything! Please... we were married! Remember the kitchen? Remember Thanksgiving?”
Claire stepped down the marble stairs, her emerald dress rustling softly in the profound silence of the room. She stopped two feet away from him, looking down at the man who had once tried to destroy her soul over a burnt turkey.
“Daniel,” Claire said, her voice carrying clearly across the cavernous ballroom. “When you asked me for a divorce over that turkey, you thought you were discarding a burden. You didn't realize you were unshackling a queen.”
Daniel fell to his knees on the marble floor, weeping openly, clutching at the hem of her dress. “I’m sorry! I was a fool! Please!”
Claire gently, effortlessly pulled her dress away from his trembling fingers. She didn't look down at him with anger. She looked down with absolute, liberating indifference.

“Security,” Claire said calmly. “Show Mr. Sterling out. The party is for invited guests only.”
