Chapter 32 - The Audit Trail of Ruin

The kitchen grew deathly silent, save for the rhythmic ticking of the antique wall clock and the low, exhausted breathing of Evelyn Vance across the counter.
Claire flipped through the pages with methodical precision. Each document was a nail in a coffin—not hers, but Daniel's. The papers detailed a complex web of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent asset stripping, and illegal shell companies registered overseas under stolen identities. But what made Claire’s breath catch in her throat wasn't just the sheer scale of the white-collar crime; it was the name listed as the primary beneficiary and guarantor of the fraudulent loans.
It wasn't Daniel. It was his mother, Eleanor.
"He didn't just ruin his own career," Claire murmured, her voice barely a breath. "He used his mother's estate as collateral."
Evelyn nodded frantically, leaning closer across the island. "When the corporate audit hit the Boston office last week, Daniel went completely unhinged. He started shredding documents by the boxful. But I had a feeling. I’ve been copying files to an external encrypted drive for months, just in case he tried to throw me under the bus. When I saw him drafting a false affidavit accusing me of masterminding the entire embezzlement scheme to federal investigators... I knew I had to run."
Claire looked up from the papers, her eyes locking onto Evelyn's. There was no trace of the naive, broken woman she had met at the Thanksgiving dinner table a year ago. That woman was gone, buried under the rubble of a shattered marriage and reborn in the fire of absolute independence. Now, she was looking at a federal storm about to make landfall, and Daniel was standing right in the eye of it with his umbrella upside down.
"Why bring this to me, Evelyn?" Claire asked, her tone razor-sharp. "You could have gone straight to the FBI. You could have walked into a federal precinct in Boston."
"And get arrested as an accessory before I even reached the front desk?" Evelyn let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Daniel has powerful friends in the district attorney's office. His connections run deep in the city. But you? You walked away from him with nothing, refusing his hush money, refusing his settlement terms, and you built a multi-million-dollar catering empire entirely on your own merit. You have independent legal representation that money can't buy. If *you* hand these documents to the federal prosecutor leading the corporate fraud task force... they can't bury it. They won't dare."
Claire stood up slowly, walking over to the large bay window that looked out over the snowy backyard. The moonlight cast a pale, stark glow across the kitchen floor. She thought back to that fateful Thanksgiving day—the smell of roasting turkey, the arrogant demand for a divorce, the cruel laughter of Eleanor, and the utter disregard for everything she had poured into their family for over a decade. They had thought her disposable. They had thought her voice would be silenced by shame and isolation.
Instead, she had built an empire of her own. And now, the universe had gift-wrapped the architects of her past misery and laid them right at her back door.

"Let me make a phone call," Claire said, turning around with a chillingly calm smile. "Let's see how fast Daniel's house of cards collapses when the wind actually starts blowing."
