Chapter 46 - The Invitation

Three weeks later, the snow in Boston and Newport had melted, giving way to the crisp, vibrant bloom of early spring.

In the sunlit grand dining hall of Vance Manor—now fully restored, polished, and smelling of beeswax and fresh lavender—a long mahogany table was being set. But this table was not for ungrateful husbands or demanding, toxic in-laws.

At the head of the table stood Claire, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that commanded the room. Around her, a dozen people laughed and bustled about—local community leaders, loyal friends from her days of rebuilding her catering business, Marcus, and Julian.

The heavy oak doors of the manor swung open, and a young assistant walked in carrying a silver tray stacked with hundreds of thick, cream-colored envelopes.

“The invitations for the grand Vance Foundation charity gala are ready, Miss Vance,” the assistant said respectfully. “Where would you like the first one sent?”

Claire walked over, picked up the topmost envelope, and looked at the address handwritten neatly across the front: *Eleanor Sterling, Room 4B, Municipal SRO Housing, downtown Boston.*

She smiled—not a smile of bitterness, but of absolute, sovereign grace. She slipped the envelope into a mail pouch, knowing full well that Eleanor was currently living on subsidized food stamps while working a cash-register shift, watching television reports about the rise of the Vance Foundation, headed by the very woman she had once ordered to cook her turkey.

“Send it to general delivery,” Claire instructed smoothly. “Let her see what a real table looks like.”
