Chapter 28 - The Meeting in the Corridor

Three days later, the corporate restructuring of Sterling-Vance Enterprises was officially announced to the public. Financial news outlets across the country picked up the story: *The Mysterious Return of the Sterling Dynasty—Housewife Turns Corporate Empire Around.*
Down in the massive, bustling lobby of the corporate headquarters, employees were rushing back and forth carrying boxes, setting up new workstations, and preparing for the grand relaunch under Claire's direct leadership.
Outside the rotating glass doors, shivering against the biting wind and pressing his face against the exterior glass, stood Daniel.
He hadn't eaten in two days. His face was unshaven, his eyes sunken and wild, his parka filthy and torn. He had seen the headline on a discarded newspaper left on a park bench: *Sterling-Vance Enterprises Announces New Executive Leadership.*
He had to see it for himself. He had to know if the woman inside that building—the woman who now owned his former firm, his former clients, and his former life—was really his ex-wife.
With a desperate, manic burst of energy, Daniel pushed through the rotating glass doors.
The security guard near the front desk immediately stepped forward, his hand resting on his belt. "Sir! Stop right there. You can't come in here looking like that. This is a private corporate building."
"I need to see her!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking hysterically as he pointed toward the elevator banks. "I used to run this place! My name is Daniel Vance! I need to speak to Claire!"
"Mr. Vance doesn't work here anymore, buddy," the security guard said coldly, stepping into his path and grabbing him firmly by the shoulder of his frayed parka. "And neither do you. Now turn around and walk out before I throw you out."
"Let go of me!" Daniel thrashed wildly, trying to break free, his desperation overriding all logic. "Claire! Claire, please! It's me! Just give me a minute! I'm your husband!"
At that exact moment, the private executive elevator dinged softly, and the doors slid open.
Claire stepped out into the lobby, accompanied by two senior board members and Mark. She was dressed in a sharp, impeccably tailored navy-blue pantsuit, her posture straight, her head held high, radiating an aura of absolute, untouchable power and grace.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
The lobby went dead silent. The employees working at the front desks froze, turning their heads to look at the commotion near the entrance.
Daniel broke free from the security guard’s grip with a sudden, violent lunge, stumbling forward across the marble floor until he fell to his knees right at Claire’s feet, clutching desperately at the hem of her tailored trousers.
"Claire..." Daniel sobbed, his voice a ragged, pathetic wail as tears streamed down his dirt-stained cheeks. "Claire, please. Look at me. Please. I was wrong. I was so stupid. Chloe ruined me, she took everything, I have nowhere to go, I’m starving, Claire. Please... you’re my wife. Have mercy on me. Just... help me."
The lobby watched in stunned silence. Not a single person moved.
Claire looked down at him.
She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel triumph. She didn't even feel pity. She simply looked down at the man who had tried to crush her spirit on a cold Thanksgiving evening a year ago, and realized how small, how hollow, and how completely insignificant he truly was.
She slowly pulled her trousers free from his trembling, dirty fingers, stepping back half a pace to keep her shoes from being soiled.
"Daniel," Claire said, her voice clear, calm, and effortlessly resonant, carrying easily across the entire marble lobby. "You told me a year ago that you wanted a divorce because you deserved passion, and that I was just part of the furniture."
Daniel looked up, his face twisted in absolute agony, his lips trembling. "I didn't mean it... I swear to God I didn't mean it..."
"You meant every word," Claire replied, her gaze as cold and unyielding as polished steel. "And you got exactly what you wanted. You built your house on sand, and when the tide came in, it washed you away. But this house..." She swept her hand outward, indicating the magnificent corporate lobby, the bustling employees, and the brilliant future stretching out before her. "...is built on rock."
She turned to the security guard, who was standing at attention nearby.
"Escort this trespasser off the property," Claire ordered smoothly. "And if he ever comes within five hundred feet of this building again, call the police."
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman," the guard said firmly.
Before Daniel could scream, before he could lunge forward again, two security guards grabbed him by the arms, hoisting his frail, struggling body off the marble floor and dragging him backward toward the revolving doors.
"Claire! *CLAIRE!*" Daniel shrieked as he was hauled away, his voice echoing off the glass walls until the heavy doors swung shut and swallowed his screams into the winter afternoon.
Claire didn't look back. She adjusted the lapels of her navy suit, turned to Mark and the board members, and offered a serene, radiant smile.
"Shall we proceed to the conference room?" she asked calmly.
May you like
"After you, Madam Chairwoman," Mark smiled, his eyes shining with a profound, unshakeable devotion.
