Chapter 34 - The Knock at Sunrise

The first pale streaks of winter dawn were painting the eastern sky in bruised shades of violet and gray when the crunch of heavy vehicle tires echoed up the long gravel driveway.

Claire was sitting at the kitchen island, a fresh mug of black coffee in her hand, reviewing the final guest manifest for her upcoming holiday charity gala. Evelyn had fallen asleep on the living room sofa two hours earlier, exhausted by adrenaline and fear.

The sound of car doors slamming shut shattered the morning stillness.

Claire didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her coffee, set the mug down, and walked calmly toward the front foyer as heavy, authoritative knocks rattled the heavy oak front door.

She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

Standing on the porch were two men in dark wool coats, their federal badges glinting coldly in the morning frost. Behind them stood Marcus Vance, looking impeccably groomed despite the ungodly hour, carrying a leather briefcase.

"Mrs. Sterling?" the lead federal agent asked, flashing his credentials.

"Good morning, Agent Miller," Claire replied evenly, stepping aside to let them in. "You're right on time."

"We received the preliminary data package from Mr. Vance's firm an hour ago," Agent Miller said, stepping into the warm foyer, his breath pluming slightly. "Based on the digital signatures and the offshore trail, a federal magistrate just signed off on search and seizure warrants for Daniel Sterling's primary residence and his corporate office in Boston. We need to secure the physical copies and the original drive."

"They're right this way," Claire said, leading them toward the kitchen where the manila envelope rested untouched on the marble island.

Marcus Vance stepped inside behind the agents, giving Claire an approving nod. "I see you haven't lost your touch for grand entrances, Claire."

"I learned from the best," Claire smiled faintly. "Is Daniel aware?"

"Not yet," Marcus said, popping open his briefcase to retrieve a secured hard-drive case. "The arrest warrant is being executed simultaneously as we speak. By the time he wakes up in his luxury penthouse thinking about his next corporate merger, federal marshals will be slapping cuffs on his wrists."

Just as Marcus spoke, Evelyn walked sleepily out of the living room, wrapped in the spare blanket Claire had given her. She froze upon seeing the federal agents, her eyes going wide with sudden panic.

"It's okay, Evelyn," Claire said gently, stepping forward to offer a reassuring hand. "They're here to protect you. The file is secure."

Evelyn let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the immense weight of terror lifted from her shoulders. "It's over," she whispered. "It's finally over."

May you like

"No," Claire said, her eyes hardening as she looked out the frost-covered window toward the horizon where the sun was beginning to break over the frozen hills. "For us, it's just beginning. For them... it's the reckoning."
