Chapter 9 - The Long-Awaited Apology

Harold cleared his throat softly, his eyes shifting from Lily up to Daniel and his wife with a vulnerability no one had ever seen in him before. In a voice uncharacteristically quiet, cracked, and humble, he admitted out loud that he and Patricia had been terribly, unforgivably wrong. He confessed that Patricia’s stubborn pride had kept them bitterly isolated from the grandchildren they truly loved, and that seeing Lily’s radiant talent, intelligence, and pure happiness finally made him realize what miserable, toxic fools they had been.
Lily looked up anxiously at her father, and seeing the warm, gentle nod of encouragement and permission from Daniel, she smiled brightly and stepped forward to show her grandfather the intricate details of her artwork. Harold slowly crouched down on aching knees—something he had proudly never done before in his life—and listened with rapt attention as the little girl eagerly explained every single brushstroke, shade of paint, and hidden star in her picture.
Though Patricia was still far too proud and stubborn to join him that day, Harold’s emotional breakthrough marked a monumental turning point for the entire extended family. He promised right then and there to make amends properly, starting with a sincere, heartfelt apology to Lily that came straight from his soul.
