Chapter 3 - The Departure of the Unforgiving

Patricia’s rigid pride would not allow her to apologize, let alone concede defeat in front of her extended family and peers. Gathering her designer handbag with trembling, claw-like hands, she announced loudly that Daniel was clearly under the manipulative spell of an outsider and that he would eventually live to regret turning his back on his own flesh and blood. Harold, grumbling harsh, defensive agreements under his breath to support his wife, stood up from his chair to follow her out.
A handful of older relatives—deeply traditional, snobbish, and fiercely loyal to Patricia’s archaic social hierarchy—stood up in solidarity with the grandparents, casting cold, disapproving glares toward Daniel and his wife as they moved toward the foyer. As this small, toxic faction marched toward the front door, the atmosphere in the dining room noticeably shifted, lifting a suffocating weight off the shoulders of everyone who remained.
Mason and Chloe remained firmly in their seats, hesitating only for a second as their grandparents glared back at them from the doorway, silently demanding that the teenagers follow them out. Mason looked directly at his father, then exchanged a resolute glance with his younger sister Chloe, and quietly stated that he wanted to stay right here. Chloe nodded vigorously in agreement, defying their grandparents' toxic control for the first time in their lives. Patricia let out a sharp, bitter scoff, slammed the front heavy oak door behind her with a resounding crash, and left the remaining family behind to pick up the pieces of a ruined evening.
