Chapter 1 - The Gathering

The celebration was meant to be a joyous occasion marking Daniel's thirty-eighth birthday, hosted by his mother, Patricia Whitman, who had meticulously curated the guest list under the guise of an intimate, family-only gathering. The dining room was alive with festive color—bright balloons tied to the backs of polished wooden chairs, streamers draping elegantly across the chandelier, and the quiet, comforting murmurs of conversation blending with the gentle clinking of crystal.

Seated at the long dining table were Daniel's older children from his previous marriage, sixteen-year-old Mason and thirteen-year-old Chloe, alongside Daniel's current wife and her seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Though Daniel had lovingly embraced Lily as his own daughter since she was three years old—teaching her how to ride a bicycle, helping her with school projects, and tucking her in every night—Patricia and Harold Whitman had never truly accepted the little girl as part of their bloodline. To them, Lily was merely an outsider's child.

As dinner progressed, Patricia cruelly singled out Lily. Leaning down with a sweet, venomous smile, she whispered that Lily needed to leave the table immediately to make room for Daniel's "real children" and immediate family. Before anyone could intervene, Patricia forcibly guided the bewildered, heartbroken little girl toward the hallway.

When Daniel discovered Lily crying alone in the corridor, a cold, blinding fury washed over him. Marching back into the dining room, he stood before the entire stunned assembly and delivered a fierce, unyielding defense of his daughter, declaring that anyone who valued biological prejudice over genuine love was free to walk out of his home forever.
