Chapter 2 - The Fallout at the Table

The shockwaves of Daniel's declaration reverberated through the dining room like a sudden thunderclap. Patricia’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, alternating between furious disbelief and intense public humiliation, while Harold Whitman gripped the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. Several relatives who had long enabled Patricia's toxic favoritism exchanged uneasy, sideways glances, suddenly unsure where their loyalties lay or how to defuse the escalating tension.

Mason and Chloe sat in paralyzed silence; Mason, sixteen and deeply impressionable, looked back and forth between his grandmother and his step-father with conflicting, troubled emotions, while thirteen-year-old Chloe kept her eyes fixed on her plate, her heart aching with quiet sympathy for Lily. Daniel did not wait for his parents to recover their composure or launch into a defensive tirade. He knelt back down beside Lily on the hardwood floor, speaking in a low, gentle, unwavering voice that cut through the stifling atmosphere. He assured her that she was fiercely loved, completely safe, and that she would never, ever have to worry about anyone pushing her away again.

Rising to his full height, Daniel towered over the head of the table, his posture rigid and commanding. He explicitly informed his parents that their antiquated, toxic notions of family had no place under his roof. The heavy silence stretched on, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the antique wall clock, until Patricia finally found her voice, sputtering outrage about respect, tradition, and filial obedience. Without raising his voice—which made his words all the more terrifying—Daniel reiterated his boundary, making it crystal clear that an immediate, sincere apology to Lily was the absolute minimum requirement for anyone wishing to stay.
