Chapter 6 - The Olive Branch That Wasn't

Two weeks after the incident, Patricia made her first clumsy move toward reconciliation, though it was entirely on her own arrogant terms, expecting things to simply snap back to how they were. She arrived unannounced at Daniel and Emma’s home on a Tuesday afternoon, bearing a wrapped gift box and wearing a stony, unyielding expression, fully expecting to smooth things over without ever uttering a single word of apology. When Daniel opened the front door, she brushed past him into the hallway as if nothing extraordinary had ever happened, haughtily demanding to see her biological grandchildren immediately.

Daniel firmly blocked her path in the foyer, calmly and coldly informing her that uninvited guests would not be admitted into his home until she was ready to offer a sincere, unreserved, and direct apology to Lily. Patricia scoffed loudly, crossing her arms and arguing that elders never apologized to children, and that Daniel was letting a child dictate family rules.

Watching the confrontation unfold from the living room doorway, Mason stepped forward and shocked everyone by speaking up with absolute authority. He looked his grandmother dead in the eye and told her that she was entirely wrong, that Lily was his real sister, and that until Patricia learned to respect every single member of their household equally, she was not welcome to visit them ever again. Stunned, humiliated, and deeply angered by her eldest grandson's betrayal, Patricia retreated to her luxury sedan and sped away in a furious cloud of dust.
