Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Nursery

By Tuesday morning, news of Chloe Vance’s return had sent shockwaves through high society and the board of Vance Global Logistics.

While Noah remained safely by Chloe’s side in the master suite—surrounded by private security guards hired directly by Marcus—a team of forensic accountants and state investigators descended upon the Vance Estate.

Sitting in the central office with Marcus and Chloe was Detective Marcus Reed from the State Financial Crimes Division.

Spread across the large oak desk were three thick leather binders containing six years of corporate filings executed by Victoria and Julian Vance.

"Ms. Vance," Detective Reed spoke, pointing to a series of wire transfers dated three months after the fire in Geneva. "When Victoria claimed legal guardianship of Noah six years ago, she used his status as sole primary heir to authorize twelve million dollars in secondary capital draws from the family trust."

Marcus Vance leaned over the desk, his eyes wide with horror as he scanned the paper trail.

"Where did the twelve million dollars go, Detective?" Marcus demanded.

"It was funneled directly into offshore accounts in Grand Cayman," Detective Reed revealed. "Registered under a shell entity called Vantage Property Holdings—an entity owned entirely by Victoria and Julian."

They hadn't just stolen Chloe's baby. They had kept Noah alive as a human key to unlock a multi-million-dollar trust fund, while slowly funneling his inheritance into their private accounts before he turned eighteen.

At that moment, the library door opened.

Victoria stepped into the room, flanked by her high-priced private defense attorney, Julian Hayes. Victoria was wearing a tailored designer suit, her posture stiff, trying desperately to maintain her arrogant facade.

"Marcus," Victoria spoke smoothly, placing a legal folder on the desk. "We are here to resolve this family misunderstanding quietly. Julian and I are prepared to surrender our administrative roles on the board in exchange for a full civil release and sole non-biological visitation rights with Noah."

Chloe stood up slowly from her chair behind the desk.

She walked around the oak table, stopping three feet from Victoria, her posture straight, her eyes cold as winter ice.

"Visitation rights?" Chloe asked softly.

"I raised that boy for six years, Chloe!" Victoria snapped, her mask slipping for a fraction of a second. "He calls me Mom! You can't just walk back into this house after six years and erase the mother he knows!"

"He ran past you in front of five hundred people, Victoria," Chloe said, every word dropping like polished granite. "He walked past his aunts, he walked past his grandfather, and he ran to a woman wearing a maid's uniform because his heart knew who his mother was."

Chloe reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a small digital recorder.

"And as for your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman," Chloe added, pressing play on the device.

The recorded voice of the Swiss clinic administrator echoed clearly through the office speakers:

"Mrs. Victoria Vance paid me two hundred thousand euros in cash in 2020 to forge the birth registry and alter the DNA records for the child Noah Vance. She told me the biological mother had died during delivery."

Victoria went completely white. Her designer handbag slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor with a heavy thud.

"Victoria Vance and Julian Vance," Detective Reed announced, pulling two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for Kidnapping, Conspiracy to Commit Homicide, Corporate Fraud, and Grand Larceny."
