Chapter 2 - The Fire in Geneva

By 1:00 AM, the grand ballroom had been cleared of all outside guests, leaving only the primary inner circle of the Vance family inside the estate's private library.

Sitting in a leather armchair near the grand fireplace was Elena—or rather, Chloe Vance—holding six-year-old Noah securely in her lap. The little boy refused to let go of her thumb, his head resting peacefully against her chest as he listened to her heart beat.

Standing by the window was Marcus Vance—Chloe's elder brother and the primary trustee of the family logistics firm. Beside him stood Beatrice, her hands trembling as she held a cup of warm tea she couldn't bring herself to drink.

Across the room, standing defensively near the door, were Victoria and her husband, Julian—the man who had married Victoria six months after Chloe's reported death.

"Explain it, Chloe," Marcus demanded, his voice hoarse with a mixture of shock, guilt, and rising fury. "Six years ago, we received a certified death certificate from the Swiss authorities. We were told the private clinic in Geneva caught fire, and that you and your newborn baby died in the maternity wing."

Chloe gently stroked Noah’s hair, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, sharp fire as she looked across the room at Victoria and Julian.

"The fire wasn't an accident, Marcus," Chloe said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "And I didn't die. I was poisoned."

Victoria took a sharp step back, her face flushing crimson. "This is slander! She's making up stories!"

"Seven years ago," Chloe continued, ignoring Victoria entirely, "when I became pregnant with Noah, our father designated fifty percent of the Vance Shipping voting shares to be placed in an irrevocable trust for my child upon his birth. But three weeks before my due date, Julian and Victoria realized that if my baby survived, their branch of the family would lose control of the board."

Julian cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his silk tie. "Chloe... you were delirious with fever during your delivery. You're misremembering—"

"I am not misremembering, Julian!" Chloe declared, her voice booming across the library with an absolute authority that made him flinch. "Victoria bribed the clinic administrator in Geneva. They injected me with a paralytic agent, stole my newborn son from my arms, and set fire to the medical records wing to erase the paper trail!"

Beatrice dropped her teacup onto the carpet, where it shattered into fragments. "My God... Victoria... is this true?!"

"I survived because a French paramedic pulled my unconscious body out through the service exit," Chloe wept softly, holding Noah tighter. "I suffered severe head trauma and spent three years in a public rehabilitation facility in Lyon with no memory of my name or my past. But four months ago, after a secondary surgery, my memory came rushing back."

Chloe looked down at her small son.

"I didn't come back with lawyers or guns, Marcus," Chloe whispered. "I took a job as an anonymous maid in this house three weeks ago because I needed to see my son. I needed to know if he was safe. And the first night I walked past his nursery, I heard him humming the lullaby our grandmother wrote for us."

Noah looked up at Chloe, offering a small, brilliant smile. "I remembered the birds in the song, Mommy."
